My wife received the following email this morning at her usual non-Yahoo email address. It didn't address her by name, but did correctly place one of her passwords in the Subject line and the message body.

The password was correct, a real one for her Yahoo account which she hasn't used in years.

I might have ponied up the Bitcoin demanded ;) if it wasn't for the claim that the sender had video of my wife watching porn. If only he/she knew how unlikely that is! If the email had been sent to me, absolutely plausible, but my wife?!!! I'm still chuckling. (Jokes about me not knowing what my wife is really like will be predictable and lame.)

Anyway, just in case YOU watch porn and you get this message, don't sweat it. But change the password everywhere you use it!

I do know p4589nh one of your password. Lets get right to the purpose. Nobody has compensated me to check about you. You do not know me and you're most likely wondering why you're getting this e-mail?

Well, I placed a malware on the adult streaming (adult porn) web-site and guess what, you visited this site to experience fun (you know what I mean).

While you were watching video clips, your web browser started out working as a Remote control Desktop that has a keylogger which provided me access to your screen and also web camera. Just after that, my software program obtained every one of your contacts from your Messenger, social networks, and e-mail . Next I made a double-screen video. 1st part displays the video you were viewing (you have a fine taste : )), and second part displays the recording of your webcam, & it is you.

You actually have 2 options. We should understand each of these solutions in particulars:

First option is to disregard this e mail. In this instance, I am going to send your very own tape to every single one of your contacts and just think regarding the disgrace you feel. Moreover if you are in an affair, exactly how it will affect?

Latter solution will be to pay me $7000. We will name it as a donation. In such a case, I most certainly will promptly remove your video footage. You will go forward your way of life like this never took place and you are never going to hear back again from me.

You'll make the payment through Bitcoin (if you do not know this, search "how to buy bitcoin" in Google).

BTC Address to send to: 15ihfTyBc3J345sfUy6jiv3Vv9jZQgCgHJpp

[CASE SENSITIVE, copy & paste it]

If you may be thinking about going to the authorities, very well, this email message cannot be traced back to me. I have dealt with my moves. I am not attempting to ask you for money so much, I simply want to be paid. I have a special pixel within this message, and at this moment I know that you have read this message. You have one day to make the payment. If I don't get the BitCoins, I definitely will send out your video to all of your contacts including close relatives, co-workers, etc. However, if I receive the payment, I will erase the video immediately. If you need evidence, reply Yes and I will certainly send out your video to your 9 friends. It is a non:negotiable offer so please do not waste my personal time & yours by replying to this message.

I tried to remember if I'd used my wife's computer to access porn ;) but then remembered that she doesn't even have a webcam! Nor do I.

Still, I can imagine some poor buggers having seizures about it. Hope the word gets around that it's just another scam to join the "Canada Revenue Agency" and other ones... the real password in this one did give me a jolt.

Did it speculate about the source of the real passwords? Yahoo admitted to a serious hack of its systems a year or more ago... maybe that's where they got my wife's password?
Yes. They said the source was older breaches from about ten years ago available on sites like pastebin.

The passcodes are from the various data breaches that have occurred over the years. They’re freely available on the dark web. Change your passcodes regularly. Ignore the email.

Wait, you're trying to extort money from me by threatening to prove to people that I have watched porn??? Um, I'm a guy for fuck sakes. Show me one dude who hasn't watched porn. Go right ahead and tell all of my contacts, most of them already assume that I watch porn so why would I give a fuck?

More importantly, never pay blackmail.
never trust someone making a living extorting ppl to hold their end of the bargain.

this thread should be linked in the senior citizens thread. theyre usually the biggest prey to scams like this.

you know theres a lot of rich smart guys like Gates, Musk, Zuckerberg, Bezos...most of whom have made their billions in some form through the internet. would love to see one step up and try and do something about this problem.

Well because suspecting you do and watching you do it are two completely separate things lol.

you know, i agree here. these guys are awfully good at figuring out how to make money. should it be so difficult for them to tackle this problem? maybe so, i don't actually know. however, i haven't heard anything that suggests they are trying to

I get a ton of the Nigerian/FBI/Courier or whatever other scam emails and have often wondered why Google, etc. do not close down the accounts sending them. It shouldn't be difficult to figure out which email addresses are sending out thousands upon thousands of emails.
