About a dozen years back, RG Keen and I were planning to write a "distortion bible". The idea was to explain distortion, including its historical origins, its biological origins (which was partly where I came in, with respect to the perceptual aspects of distortion, and why we perceive it and react to it as we do), its engineering origins, and the many and sundry forms of deliberate distortion, including the exotic forms, plus a cookbook of how to optimally achieve the kind you want. The goal was to make any beginner a master of distortion; like providing them with the whole spicebox and instructing them on how to best use every spice in the rack. We got a couple of chapters into it (which I think I still have), but the project fizzled. Maybe one day. He's a great thinker, and has evolved into a terrific technical writer as well.
