If you listen to the videos you'll see when I roll my guitar volume back to around 1 or 2 it cleans up really nice. It's a must-have for when I mod these amps.
I did skip around the video to find it, but I couldn't. I'm definitely in the minority but I run my '83 CSA 2203 clean as a pedal platform. I'm still tossing around the idea of 6550's and a new OT when the current one goes.

I think some od pedals sound very good with these amps but they are all so noisy with the white noise when you stop playing and roll your guitar volume back. That's one of the reasons I don't use them. I like modding them like this so they're plug & play and also lot less noisy when using them modded this way.
I play with mine on 8 (pre-amp at just under 2) and it's pretty quiet at the dead stops in our set. I use a fulltone OCD for my dirt, and jack that up with a micro amp. I do get white noise sometimes but it's not consistent. We just picked up a power conditioner which should help considerably.

Back in the day when I actually used mine (CSA 2203 but w/ Sylvania 6CA7 instead of 6550 like you) I often used to do the same thing- set it clean and use pedals. Using the low input usually. However, I gotta say, the high input with the gain at about 7-8 is just the sound of rock.... love it. Other than clipping the bright cap I never felt the need to mod that amp, it just crushes as is.
