So I've been having this weird thing happen lately. Every time I finish playing I'm satisfied and not wanting something more... The biggest piece was getting my Maverick parts-o-caster set up and wired right, the final piece seems to have been the Peavey Valverb I got recently, but it really is the whole setup working wonderfully well together, even in some different configurations for different musical approaches. My only problem now is I'm afraid to accidentally touch any knobs.

Questions: Is anyone else actually satisfied with their gear? Does this feeling last? What do I do on this site and TGP now that I don't need or want gear?kkjq

Somehow I felt like I HAD to make a choice between a beautiful used Rckembacker 360 in natural blonde, and an equally gorgeous AVRI '69 Thinline Telecaster.

The Telecaster won, and now she is home with me here in Toronto.
One of the cool things about this version of the Melody Maker is that it is loaded with two full-blown authentic Gibson P-90 pickups, which sound fantastic.

Why this is a great opportunity: Gibson introduced its beloved Melody Maker "student" lineup in 1959, and it has been a favorite of players seeking great tone at a great value ever since. In the spirit of the countless Melody Makers that have been modded, hot-rodded and upgraded over the years, Gibson USA introduces the Melody Maker Special. This guitar offers all the slab-bodied styling of the original Melody Maker, but is updated with the legendary P-90 pickups as found on the Les Paul Special, as well as a full-sized Les Paul-style headstock. This is a killer value on a twin P-90 Gibson.

I've seen some older threads on this, and I was wondering if there is any new consensus on the best way to ship a solid-body electric guitar (not vintage) from Toronto to the US. I would need to insure it for about $3,000.

Are there any issues with particular species of wood or anything to be concerned about? I.e., do they stop/confiscate rosewood or mahogany or anything like that?

Thanks!

For you strat lovers among us. This is a little different in that it has a bound body, something you don't see on too many strat style guitars. It also has EMG's instead of the more common single coils.
A carved maple top and EMG pickups give you beauty in looks and tone.

The ESP LTD Deluxe MH-1000 electric guitar features a set-thru 3-piece maple neck, mahogany body with gorgeous carved maple top, and a rosewood fretboard. The thin, U-shaped neck with 24 extra jumbo frets provides comfort and speed. An EMG-81 humbucker at the bridge and an 85 at the neck provide plenty of power and note definition. Grover tuners and an FR locking nut keep you tuned and intoned, so you'll sound your best. Volume, tone and a 3-way toggle give you options with simplicity. Genuine Floyd Rose bridge let you dive bomb the night away. Black hardware, offset abalone block inlays and white with abalone purfling finish off a great look.

Set-thru neck construction is an innovative technique in which the neck is glued to the body (like a set neck), however the traditional bulky heel is carved away (similar to neck-thru-body construction). This makes access to the ESP MH-1000's upper frets and the neck-to-body transition much smoother. Just as on a set neck, you will get a combination of tone from both the neck and body with the set-thru construction. The sound will depend on the types of wood used, but generally will have a fuller, warmer tone when compared to most neck-thru-body electric guitars.

I picked this guitar up a month or so ago and can't put it down! - slightly neck heavy (very lightweight) but killer sounding and vibe. Here's the description of what was done to it by DJ. It is sporting Zhangbusters which i'm not familiar with (but they sound great).

“2009 Custom Shop Standard just back from Dave Johnson , total refinish with the correct red pore filler, aging and real celluloid inlays, very lightweight 6 lb 4 ounces, Vintage Clone knobs, poker chip and switch tip, RetroSpec stoptail steel studs, bridge studs and thumbwheels, aged Kluson double ring tuners, this guitar really came out nice!! Great playing and sounding guitar that’s the best reissue SG I’ve had. Pretty much any guitar I send to Dave is an upper end guitar in looks and tone. I wouldn’t bother sending him a guitar that wasn’t already special. The guitar comes with all the Gibson paperwork, certificate, Dave Johnson letter and black Gibson Custom case.”
Schecter Guitar Research SGR 006 Electric Guitar

A value-packed axe with a full-scale maple neck, dual humbuckers and TOM bridge.

The SGR 006 Electric Guitar has the design and features of Schecter guitars costing much more. The double-cutaway body is made of basswood with beveled edges for playing comfort. Its bolt-on maple neck has a rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium frets and an intricate Gothic Cross inlay at the 12th fret. SRG humbucking pickups and a Schecter tune-o-matic bridge offer the tones and sustain that make this guitar an exceptional value. Comes with a Schecter gigbag.

Schecter tuners
These high quality tuners feature a classic design in a lubricated and sealed housing to protect gears for a lifetime of maintenance free playability. Details include a 15:1 gear ratio for smooth and precise tuning, removable knobs, threaded hex peghead bushing, and a 10mm diameter peg hole.

Rosewood fingerboard
The most common fretboard, Rosewood is naturally oily, and works well for any surface that sees frequent human contact. The sound is richer in fundamental than maple because the stray overtones are absorbed into the oily pores.

SGR pickups by Schecter Diamond Plus
Over wound coils with a Ceramic Magnet give this aggressive high output pickup the push that will send your Amp over the edge. Made for crunchy rhythms and blistering leads. Perfect for drop tunings. This pickup will cut through the mix with ease.

Maple neck
Maple has a uniform grain, it’s strong and stable, and it has less reaction from environmental changes than other hardwoods. Its tone is highly reflective, and focuses more energy onto the body wood. Maple transfers a bright tone to the body which complements the warm tones of a mahogany body
I know very little (ok, less than that) about electrics and pedals in general. I'd like to get something that would push my amp into tube overdrive without shaking the walls. I'd also like to experiment with new sounds. Help me learn from your experience.
Also, aren't electric guitars cool?

I bought a couple of Strat bodies from dmc69 back in early March, and I've finally gotten around to putting one of them together. I bought a Fiesta Red Strat for my office a few months ago, and I thought a Surf Green one would be a great counterpart at home.

The pickguard assembly is from an American Standard Strat, Fender reissue bridge and kluson reissue tuners. Neck is (I assume) a Chinese made replacement strat neck with 9.5" radius and medium jumbo frets. Two piece maple with rosewood skunk stripe and fret markers (a nice touch over the standard black plastic). Fit and finish on both the neck and the body are impeccable, definitely better than my Mexican Strat.

Some Strat group shots:

Under $450 total including any taxes and shipping, and it's easily on par with my American guitars in terms of both tone and playability. The MIM doesn't come close.

So this is my 2nd time around owning one of these. here's the first one I owned back some time ago. about 2 yrs or so. I made a bit of dough on it and I was lovin' it too much.

So that one's out the door and I can't stop looking for another flashy one. I found one it New Brunswick on Kijiji. a super nice Francophone who bought it, never bonded with it, and NEVER CHANGED THE STRINGS!!!!! ever!!!! it was played about 2-5hrs max!! crazy. He shipped it to me in the orig case. I got a good deal.

here it is. plays great, has the trem. and the slient circuit works like a charm.

I don't know how long I'll keep it for. so far, It's my first brand new (not new) guitar ever. there are no blemishes on it at all! crazy amazing craftsmanship.

who else loves the EBMM guitars??

How do you like your trem set up? hard against the body, soft against... , floating, or blocked and why?

Featherlight (no we're not talking about a boxing division) and Airplane-grade (and no, you can't fly it).............
but you can likely hang it around your shoulder for a long time before your back hurts. Take a look at the Fender Custom Shop Featherlight Telecaster and tell us what you think. Paulownia and and spruce are not what you would expect in a guitar with this price but maybe it's a good thing.

Masterbuilt by one of the world's top luthiers, Yuriy Shishkov

Designed to be as lightweight-yet-resonant as possible

Masterbuilt by one of the world's top luthiers, Yuriy Shishkov
Considered one of the last true renaissance guitar builders, Yuriy Shishkov has collaborated with artists like Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Paul Stanley of KISS, and Dimebag Darrell of Pantera. Yuriy even makes many of his own woodworking tools so he can achieve exactly the results he desires. But the Featherlight Telecaster wasn't just built by Yuriy Shishkov - he designed it from the ground up with the goal of creating the lightest-weight Telecaster ever.

Designed to be as lightweight-yet-resonant as possible
Yuriy Shishkov chose ultra-lightweight paulownia and airplane-grade spruce to make the Featherlight Telecaster so light and comfortable to play. Paulownia is a rapidly-renewable wood that's very lightweight, but interestingly also has very resonant and musical qualities. As far as airplane-grade spruce, that means the spruce has been chosen, cut, and dried in a particular way to maximize strength and minimize twisting or warping. So you get a lightweight neck that enhances your note attack and definition, and also will remain straight and true as long as you own this masterpiece.
When Kurt Cobain hit the stage, it was very often with a Mustang® guitar—an enigmatic anti-hero figure with an esoteric anti-hero instrument. It’s with great pride then that Fender introduces the Kurt Cobain Mustang, which evokes the man, the band, the sound and the times, and gives an authentically crafted nod to one of the most unlikely guitars to ever find itself at the center of a musical maelstrom.

See for yourself—go back and watch the famous 1991 video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and there he is with it is slung over his shoulder. Or think back to when you saw them on the ’93-’94 In Utero tour, when he seldom went onstage with anything but a Mustang. Quite often and especially later on, Mustangs were a big influence on Kurt Cobain's distinctive sound.

Inspired by his arsenal of modded guitars, the new Fender Kurt Cobain Mustang boasts highly distinctive features including an angled single-coil Mustang neck pickup and ferocious Seymour Duncan® JB humbucking bridge pickup mounted directly to the body, dual on-off/phase in-out switches for each pickup, a polyester-finished alder body and an Adjusto-Matic™ bridge with dynamic vibrato tailpiece.

Other features include the classic 24” Mustang scale length, C-shaped maple neck with urethane finish, 7.25” radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 vintage-style frets and vintage-style ivory dot inlays, four-ply pickguard, master volume and tone controls, vintage-style tuners, and chrome hardware. Available in right- and left-handed models.
A swirling dervish guitar the likes of which you've never seen before.

This thing is so wild we're hard-pressed to come up with a guitar that has a longer, pointier lower bout than the newly-designed Danelectro Wild Thing. The swirling white pickguard accentuates the body's radical curvature and its contrast with the body finish imparts a distinct yin/yang vibe. Of course Danelectro has long been the instrument of choice for musicians who want to make a bold, distinctive visual statement with its bottle-shaped headstock and lipstick pickups while taking advantage of the Danelectro's easy playability and a price tag that won't cause financial meltdown.
Wire glue takes too long to dry and I've read it isn't very strong, so why not solve that with conductive super glue? Voila! No more soldering.

Still it ends up being around $1013 before taxes. I can't find any for less then 1200 on canadian online dealers websites. Is there anyone who have sales, discounts or price matching with PGS? As much as I would like to support the canadian middle man I am not that altruistic.

I sold my original '63 Jazzmaster awhile back and lately have been itching for a Jazzmaster again, so I picked up a used Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster just like this one...

It's a really great guitar. It's made in Mexico and has a bunch of non-period correct elements to it, but they don't bother me in the least. In some respects, they make it play better than the original - modern radius, greater angle of the strings over the bridge, etc. Mine also has a Mastery bridge, which is a nice mod for pretty much any Jazzmaster. The pickups are hotter than a traditional Jazzmaster, but I kind of dig them. Worst case, I might someday put some Lollars in or something. For now, I'm totally getting my Jazzmaster fix, though. And at about one seventh the price of what I sold my '63 for.

Greetings from springtime in London! I've had this partscaster sitting around and never did anything with it. Body was a pawnshop find in Guelph ($30) Squier but had the important full-width body. Neck is from a deal I made back in 2007 when the VG strat first came out. This guy from Cleveland sold me the guitar and when it arrived, an extra Warmoth flamed-maple neck was in the box, with locking tuners. When I asked the guy why he included the neck, he wanted a maple neck strat but at the time the VG was only available in rosewood so he bought the neck from Warmoth. He included the receipt ($366) plus the satin finish for another $80! I got a steal of a deal on that transaction. Neck is a very flat 12" radius with jumbo SS frets so when I bought this Super-Vee trem system, it was the perfect fit. Not really into these locking trem systems but because this one is really easy to fit and no excavating of guitar is required, I thought I would try it out. It really works well and doesn't look as bad as I initially thought when I opened the box!! Full sized aluminum block and the bar locks in place really well. Guitar has an older but great sounding Copperhead (now Chevalier) 59 pups which sound fantastic. Anyhow, some pics and I would recommend this system if you're looking for a locking-trem system that stays in tune. This is the older one, I think they now have something called the Bladerunner (or something like that).

Hi Guys,

I remember this thread coming up recently, but I did a search and can't find it. What is the best way to ship things from the US to Canada? I'm looking at a guitar located in Brooklyn, NY and the store said that they would ship for $100 using FedEx. I'm not so worried about the $100 shipping, more so any taxes/fees/etc. that may come up at the border. I seem to remember that FedEx usually works out better than UPS?

Thanks for any info!

I recently bought a package deal, the guy was getting rid of all his music gear, amp, 2 guitars, 5 effects pedals, guitar and music stand, cords.

The one guitar is a Fake Gibson Les Paul,, he was straight with me i knew what i was buying..I got a good deal on everything and was more interested in the amp and effects pedals. He bought the guitar and put about 600.00 into it..He changed all the pickups and tuners and had the frets levelled.

This guitar plays pretty good, the only thing it needs is a proper nut.The weight is 8.7 lbs, i believe the body is basswood and it has a flame maple cap. It has the gibson logo on it , the problem area of the guitar is at the nut area, were the real Gibsons usually break. The guitar has 1/8 less wood in that area then should be, it could very easily break , it is so thin..I will hang the guitar on a wall hanger and hope it dont get hit..

Over all i was quite surprised how this made in China fake guitar plays, but without all the upgrades it would probably just be a wall hanger.
NOTE: The poll is multiple choice.
Here's a few different styles for your perusal. If you're a gold member you can copy and past any of these into your post.
I used to feel that every guitar should have one. Now I feel almost the exact opposite giving consideration of only having them on teles and strats. The third one below would never be seen on any guitar I owned, especially in cream but if it was a multilayer and contoured to the shape of the guitar, I might consider it.

I was over at Brian's last week, and my Tele was pretty much ready to go. All that remained was to shape the neck and apply the last two coats of Nitro. Unfortunately, Brian called yesterday and there was a reaction in the coat he applied that he didn't like, so he wants to strip it down and refinish it. I'm not complaining - it'll be done soon, and after seeing the way the transparent crimson looked, I was a little meh, so I decided to go back to good ole BSB.

Greetings! Still awaiting the real spring weather here in London and this morning my newest stratocaster arrived from it's previous home. Interesting story on this one. Started out life as a natural finish 70's Reissue and the previous owner had it refinished in shell pink. Nice job too and has the pups upgraded to CS69's. Love the big headstock and the 70's tuners are surprisingly good. Top it off with a full-size steel block and we have a great playing and sounding guitar. The set-up is great on this one and the action a bit lower than I like but very comfy. Neck is a large C.......9.5 radius and I think the frets are medium jumbo (but narrow fret-wire). Took out my two other shell pink offerings and took a family shot. Enjoy and thanks for looking!

There are a lot of guitars in this price range. By the way, we are talking new prices, not used. Which one would you pick or have you picked?

Please post pics (or at least a link) along with reason(s) for your pick.

Here is mine to start it off. It was a hard pick between the Gretsch G5120 and the Italia Mondial II but the Ibanez Artcore AF95 is my pick. Why? I've had an Artcore before and I like the neck, the flamed maple body, the ACH1/ACH2 humbuckers pickups and the gold hardware. It sells for $650.00 at MF but you could likely get it for around $550.00.

Hi Guys

Hi Guys

just finished my installation of a mini humbuckes pickup into my P90 60s Tribute Les Paul.

pics are at the very bottom of this page
http://www.projectconsultants.com/GT...sPages/NGD.htm

I saw a video that shows a minihumbuckes fitting perfect into a P90 cover.
That was all the inspiration I needed cause I allready had a SD minihumbuckes just lying in my desk.

I should mention that I had to buy and modify the top of a P90 soapbar cover.
I made the hole just big enough for the mini to pop thru...that was easy.

The Good

lots of good stuff...

First thing I found after removing the P90 was 2 extra threaded holes on the outside section of the face place that the original screws fit into from the P90. Can it be that these 2 new holes are matched for the mini humbucker...YES they were. That solved a problem that I had allready thought about and had a complicated solution.

I realy do like the tone of the mini in the neck position. I know that its a humbucker and it replaced a p90 but for now I am very pleased with the sound.

The Bad

Not even thinking about it, I went ahead and installed the minihumbucker only to realize that the dammed pickup wires where NOT long enough to travel through the cavity and reach the pot. OK..undo everything, attach longer wires and do it all over again.

The Ugly

SHould of thought about this before but is everyone aware that SD pickups when attached normal ( live wire to live and ground to ground) are usualy OUT OF PHASE with the other pickps ( that are not SD).
So this leaves the middle position for the pickups a little wanting. I did notice that if I roll back ( about 8 or so) on any on the pickups, the softer out of phase sounds dissapears and a more normal tone is evident.
I dont know what to make of that but it is what it is.

Because of the wireing, I cant reverse the mini ( did this before and it makes the cover hot so that you cant touch at all) and the P90 has only one live lead surrounded by a ground shield.

Well there it is
I think it looks fine ( if I do keep it ill have to paint the mini cover black)
Realy love the neck tone and thats a big plus.

Best of all, most things worked out the way I thought they would...and thats a good thing.

your reaction please....

G.

He's got a new signature guitar with Framus (he used to play white flying V's from Hamer and Jackson). It seems a bit difficult to find where to get one of these guitars:

Hi,

I posted about my Aria Pro II Fullerton a few days ago and I'm currently spending a few dollars tuning it up, fixing a few things and adding a few small mods. I'm also looking at getting another guitar.

I had originally wanted either a Les Paul Studio or PRS, possibly an SE Custom Semi Hollow. Definitely a dual humbucker guitar. I'm a very casual player but I am going to try and play a lot more, possibly get together with some people down the road for fun (that is a ways off though). I play mostly rock but I like some clean tones as well.

Personally, I don't buy into the thinking that low priced guitars are automatically junk or high priced guitars are automatically so much better. In the end, I feel guitars are made of wood, mostly on CNC machines and the pickups are simply magnets with some wire. It's not exactly super advanced technology here... I do understand that there is quality control, some components are well built or use better and more reliable materials. That said... As much as I like my Aria, I would like an upgrade of sorts. I definitely don't want to buy a guitar of lesser quality...

To the point of this post. The Vendetta Resurrection by Dean caught my attention, based on looks alone, I just want to play it....

http://www.deanguitars.com/vendetta_series.php

Here are the specs:
• Mahogany Top / Body
• 25-1/2" Scale
• 1-11/16" Nut
• Set Mahogany C Neck
• Rosewood Fingerboard
• Pearl Resurrection Inlays
• Abalone Body Binding
• Grover Tuners
• Black Hardware
• Tune-O-Matic Bridge
• USA DMT "Time Capsule" Pickups

That seems to have nicer components compared to their stock Vendetta 1.0:
• Basswood Top/Body
• 25-1/2" Scale
• 1-11/16" Nut
• Bolt-On Maple C Neck
• Rosewood Fingerboard
• Abalone Dot Inlays
• Die Cast Tuners
• Black Hardware
• Tune-O-Matic Bridge
• DMT Design Pickups

I've checked a few reviews around the net.. It seems like Dean doesn't quite have the same reputation as Fender, Gibson, PRS or Ibanez... It seems like Dean puts out a lot of guitars at varying price points.

Has anyone been able to check out the Resurrection model or can anyone vouch for the upgraded specs on this model? The DMT "Time Capsule" pickups, etc? I really don't know anything about these pickups or Dean guitars. Especially since I'm really just getting back into the guitar world after being away for a few years.

Any replies, advice or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

edit: Also... I'm looking at this modified PRS SE Custom.. Thoughts?
We were talking to his guitarist while he was setting up and I seem to recall he was from Wa Wa, Ontario. I’ve searched the web and I can’t seem to find a concensus as to who the guitarist might be.

I responded to Bluesmostly's post regarding Trussart guitars and it got me thinking about the "tele" type of guitars I own and how different they are, despite their similar shape. I can't really call one better than the other, they all do different things well. I wonder if Leo knew how timeless and tweakable his original design would become.

Greetings! Yesterday a friend came over and told me that he had passed a yard-sale with a guitar sitting in the driveway and knowing my obsession with anything stratocaster-related, I headed over (just a few blocks away) and there was this little Squier Mini Strat sitting there on a stand........5 strings, looks a bit rusty in places, but neck was actually really nice and frets are medium jumbo. Guy wanted $50, I offered $20 he took it. So I have another red stratocaster guitar, mind you this one is a mini-guitar! Very short-scale and the pups and electronics are garbage. Saddles will rip your palm up since the saddle screws were sitting way to high. Decided that my new $20 dollar guitar deserves $150 pups so I installed a set of Seymour Duncan SSL1's. Great sounding pups and they sound great in this little guitar. Had to fit some pup covers on the SSLs and if you look closely at the bridge pup, I had to dremel the holes bigger since the cover was not the right spacing!! Also put in some full-sized pots and a proper Orange drop cap. Took out the mini-pots(500K) and rewired everything. Had some Callaham saddles sitting around so put those in......much better on the hand and easier to intonate. The tuners are actually ok.........neck is really the best thing on the guitar. After a bit of bore oil, some minor fret-end filing polishing, this thing plays beautifully! Always love when the sum of the parts is 10X the original price of the guitar!

What to do with my Aria Pro II Fullerton

Hi,

I have had my Aria Pro II Fullerton for a lot of years. I have casually played at home over the years, mainly self taught.

I am really wanting to play a lot more guitar these days and have also signed up for a set of lessons because I want to really advance my level of playing and I feel like I've hit a ceiling of sorts or could just use some new motivation and direction.

My Aria has suffered a little bit over the years... My friend crazy glued a few small spikes along the side and when I pulled them off, it left globs of crazy glue and one of them peeled some of the paint and surface off down to the wood (small spot on the side). I also lost the attachments for where you connect a guitar strap to the guitar and in my younger wisdom I put in two bolts which may have ruined the threading if I want to replace them properly.

There is also some problems with my electronics. The 5-way selector switch seems to have a lose connection. When I play through my amp, sometimes when I switch pups, the signal gets lost and no sound comes out of the amp and I have to give it a little jiggle. It hasn't been a huge issue but it is annoying when it happens.

I'm debating buying a new guitar and getting rid of my Aria.... OR, fixing up my Aria and maybe even replacing the electronics and putting some nicer new pickups in. It does have nice low action and it feels like a good guitar to me. I don't mind fixing it up if it's worth it and I can.

If I bought another guitar, it would most likely be a Les Paul Studio, second hand. Hopefully between $700 - $1,000. I figured if this Aria is decent and I can spend a little bit to make it new again that it might be worth it to invest a little in what I already have.

It has 2 single coils and 1 humbucker. This Aria, I believe was made in the USA, I know a lot were Korean.

This is the same model/version Aria that I have:

What do you all think?!

:)

I just finished rewiring my pedal board, for about the umpteenth time - pretty much in a constant state of flux. But, you know what? I think, other than 1 slot that might get rotated, I am pretty much 'there' for now. I just spent a couple hours jamming and I am !!!!!YESSS!!!!!! True test is tomorrow at band practice, but it should be good.

Just picked up the ISP Decimator GString, and the Radial ABY box. About 3/4 of my board is under 6 months old.

I run the ABY out into a Traynor YBA1 Tribute - I use Ch1 low for clean(ish) and the blend 1+2 input for when I need another gear. Mostly my dirt comes from pedals, obviously. The Traynor is a REALLY GOOD pedal platform, and the attenuator built in is great. I'm running it at 10W and think that will work for the band too, but if not I can turn it up.

The Tele, I did a thread on before but anyways a Blacktop Tele with the pups, wiring, tuners, knobs, bridge all changed out. I just changed out the bridge pup for a super high output Duncan TB-15 Alternative 8, the neck is a JSMoore custom wind. I LOVE the neck on the blacktop, flattish without being too flat, good sized frets, not too chunky in profile but bigger than the Squier stuff.

Please, no commentary on the playground in the background - my wife does daycare :P

So, how about you? Got a rig your happy with? Or, what are you GASing for?
