anyone have any experience with Fret City strats? I know the CVs have a cultish following, but the J&D looks
pretty good for half the price.

I'm also interested in the GFS/Xaviere XV-870s. Any thoughts on how GFS pickups would sound compared to Bare Knuckles?

I have J&D P-Bass and, for the money, it's a fine amount of guitar. The fret ends are sharp, the action is high and it sounds a little flat, but for what I'm using it for (heavily effected bass lines in some home recordings) it works okay. I wouldn't buy one of their guitars based on my experience with this bass, since a guitar is something I'd want to be able to play live and with little to hinder me.

Personally: I go for the Squire. The two I've picked up and played have sounded fantastic and played great. They get that cult following for good reason.

I've also been looking into the GFS XV-870. They don't look too bad for the price.
