New from Line 6 is the Relay series wireless guitar systems. Starting with the G30 and G50 as well as a full rack G90 version. Reviewed here is the G30 Relay
Whether you are a gigging musician or a basement player the G30 Relay will not only give you the freedom of movement but won't break the bank account. Retailing for $299.00 USD it is an affordable wireless system that will get the job done with no noticeable loss in signal or tone.
The Relay systems operate within the UHF band at 2.4GHz resulting in vastly reduced chances of any interference from radios and mobile devices. During a full week of use there was no interference noted using the G30.
Comprised of a receiver with an included DC adaptor. A cable tone selector on this unit allows the user to return to that signal loss produced by traditional cable if desired. In testing I found essentially no signal loss. A 6 channel selector on the receiver and transmitter allow for any on the fly switching should an interference issue occur. The G30 claims a 98 foot range, I did not test this claim to its limit but it certainly worked 100% at distances of up to 30 feet and through walls. So stage work should be no issue at all. Battery life (2 double AA) in the transmitter is listed at 8 hours of use. This seems about right as I used it on and off for over a week before starting to see the low battery indicator light coming on. Always a good idea to throw extra batteries in your gig bag if you are playing out.
The cable length on the transmitter might be a tad short for some guitars, depending on where you want to wear the unit via the belt clip. For my LP style guitars it was no issue. I was just clipping the transmitter on to the guitar strap rather than on my belt or pocket. Since I do not play in a band I have never considered owning a wireless system. They can be expensive and for home use there seems no good reason to spend money on one. But for the price of the G30, which costs less than some effects pedals, it sure feels nice to not fiddle around with guitar cables. The only on-going expense would be the AA batteries for the transmitter. The G30 is small enough to just throw into your gig bag and take it anywhere, I took it along with me last week to a friends for some jamming and it hooks up in minutes and away you go.
Overall, I would give the Line 6 G30 a thumbs up for the performance in a easy to use, affordable wireless guitar system.
