• Song for Canada finalists announced

    From QMI Agency

Ten songwriters will leave their mark on Canada's Walk of Fame after being chosen as finalists in the A Song for Canada contest.

The 10 talents' original poems were plucked from a pool of 631 applications. They will now face a panel of judges -- including Walk of Fame founding director Peter Soumalias and married musicians Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida -- as well as Canadian voters (public online voting will take place Aug. 8-19 at www.canadaswalkoffame.com).

A winner will be announced Aug. 30. First place is a minimum of one line from their submission included in the song -- which will be co-written by Kreviazuk and Maida and composed and arranged by Stephan Moccio (2010 Vancouver Olympics theme song I Believe) -- as well at $25,000 and a trip for two to Canada's Walk of Fame Awards in October. That's also when the new tune will debut.

Second place is $2,500 and third is $1,000, and all winners' submissions will be published in a commemorative Canada's Walk of Fame magazine.

    The 10 lucky finalists include:
    Amanda Baldwin, Halifax, N.S.
    Sandra Brenneis, Sturgeon County, Alta.
    Catherine Brenan, Oakville, Ont.
    Vince Dickson, Sydney, N.S.
    Kateri D'Silva, Unionville, Ont.
    Calum Graham, High River, Alta.
    John Honess, Toronto, Ont.
    France Levesque, Saint John, N.B.
    Christine Poissant, Burnaby, B.C.
    Susan Stevenson, Aurora, Ont.
