Ok, I'm a bit of a techno-dufus....

I've done the google thing and I still don't understand.

Can anybody here explain to me the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R, and tell me why I should or need to care?

Thanks in advance.

Some players will only play one, while other players will only play the other. Its from banding of manufacturers and making their own standard rather than banding all together and agreeing on one standard..........

I think that the "R" stands for ROM. Both DVD-R and DVD+R are DVD-ROMs but come from different companies or association of companies developping similar products during the same period. The DVD-R does not stand for "minus" R but it was originally meant to say DVD-R(om). The other companies decided to call it "+" R to differenciate their product. Essentially, if I remember correctly, the DVD-R holds "more" space but it's not even worth mentionning it because it's minimally "more" space (more sectors) and in the end, both -R and +R hold 4.7 GB. I'm pretty sure that most DVD players that can read one, can also read the other type as well.

DVD-R(om)W can be re-recorded (re-writable) but DVD - or + R can only be recorded once.

You're absolutely right but this time, people quickly realized that they could be repeating the Beta episode and that 's why most players will play/record both types. It has been "standardized" by agreeing to disagree and including both. A DVD ROM is a DVD ROM whether it is a - or a + . can't fit more info (unless you go to DL (Dual-layer)) and there's no point of wasting time and money trying to prove that one is better than the other.
