I've already done my list and I think that we pretty much agree that it's tough to narrow it down to 10. But how can I not have any Saga on my list (any of the first 4 - tough on there too) and Max (my choice would be Universal Juveniles) and as Kim, I agree with Akimbo Alogo - solid album. Some very good lists so far.. keep 'em coming!

In no particular order:
Colin James - Sudden Stop (not sure how Canadian the band was at the time) - I use this CD to tune PA's at gigs as the production on all but two tracks is fantastic.
Rush - Moving Pictures - or any other early Rush album (before 86 or so)
Headpins - Turn it Loud
April Wine - The earlier stuff - being from the east coast I was brought up on this stuff.
Jeff Healy - See the Light
Sarah McLachlan - Surfacing
Junkhouse - their first release being the best IMO
Blue Rodeo - I like allot of tracks from different releases
The Tragically Hip - I like the earlier stuff the best
Teenage Head - The early years - as allways
One band that I would add on here if I could add an eleventh would be the Kings. I worked with themback in the mid to late nineties and I was suprised at how many songs they has that I liked. I thought they only had the one.

+1 for The Kings
In the fall of 2001 after 9/11, we played a fundraising for the Red Cross in Mississauga. It was a week-long non-stop music and we were fortunate to get the Thursday night 9 to 10pm spot. The Kings played after us (10 to 11) and it made me discover them a little more. I was surprised too at how many songs they have that I like. Jeff Healey played the 11 to 12 midnight spot that night.

I'd be surprised to see Vapour Trails on any list. The compression in mastering is sooooo overwhelming that this CD is almost unlistenable. I used to think that you couldn't kill a good song. (e.g. Carol King's Tapestry), but somebody took a murderous weapon to Vapour Trails.

Okay, a few of the ones that popped into my head are ones that I did not see any mention of. Probably because they are not really 'guitar' oriented albums, but what can I say, the 80's had a big influence on me...
Men Without Hats - Rhythm of Youth
The Spoons - Arias & Symphonies
Red Rider - Neruda
Jane Siberry - No Borders Here
Bryan Adams - Reckless
Barenaked Ladies - Gordon
Chalk Circle - The Great Lake
Change of Heart - Smile
Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man
54-40 - ST, Show Me, Fight For Love
Teenage Head - Frantic City
The Lowest of the Low - Shakespeare My Butt...
Moist - Silver
Oops, I guess I can't stop at 10... And there's so many others that I've left out still, CrashTest Dummies, Cowboy Junkies, Nick Gilder, Trooper, Loreena McKennitt, Rheostatics, Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot, the Band, Joni Mitchell, Alanis Morrissette, Robbie Robertson.
Some others that were already mentioned, of course, Rush (Signals, Moving Pictures, 2112, Neil Young (Harvest, After The Gold Rush, and many others), Tragically Hip (Up to Here, Road Apples, & Fully Completely in particular), and Harmonium (ST and Si On Avait Besoin... in particular), these will always be up at the top for me.
So I guess I'd have to evaluate all of these and rank them to get my top 10. I'll have to get back to you, I might have to take a listen to everything first...

Glad to see Pat Travers was mentioned. Any of his albums with Tommy Aldridge were great.
A couple of Canuck bands I didn't see though, Honeymoon Suite or Hay Wire, both of which had great guitar players in my opinion.
Don't really consider Steppenwolf Canadian but???? Many credit them with naming heavy metal.
The one and only Sheriff album deserves recognition also I think.

According the the liner notes in their Greatest Hits, they spent their "formative" years in BC and Alberta due to issues caused by the Vietnam war and were free to return to Seattle afterwards. My guess is draft dodging?

I was just browsing through the new "Top 100 Canadian Albums" book at Chapters the other day. Certain to generate some discussion, some I agree with, and some I don't. One quibble I have is 'best of' compilations making the list. I know there are many great bands who maybe only had one or two good songs every album, but if the only album of theirs you want to own is their greatest hits package, then they don't deserve to be on an 'albums' list. And adding one or two new songs to a best of does not change the situation.
Okay, here's the top 3 from the book:
1. Harvest - Neil Young
2. Blue - Joni Mitchell
3. After the Gold Rush - Neil Young

Wow. Don't want to turn this into a Heart thread but I just watched a live version (the Led Zeppelin hall of fame induction performance) and it's incredible.
Did anyone see that VH1 "Rock Honors" show where Alice in Chains and Gretchen Wilson performed Barracuda? When Gretchen started singing, the hair on the back of my neck stood up (but in a good way). She really nailed it. And then Nancy appears on stage with her Les Paul and joins in - fantastic.
I'm all for making Heart honourary Canadians.

Lots of great stuff here. I have a hard time with lists because I always have a hard time ranking things. I don't know, is Arcade Fire's "Funeral" better than Neil Young's "Harvest"? Both great albums. And how does one decide between #10 and #11? I know that's the whole point of lists, but I just can't do it. I can only say what's "great", what's "good", and what's "not really my thing".
Anyway, a couple of additions to the "great" list, feel free to rank them wherever you want... but they do need to be mentioned:
Stars - "Set Yourself On Fire" and/or "Heart". I can't decide which I like better.
Danko Jones - "My Love is Bold". There are still some Canadians making solid straight-ahead rock, with no apologies.
And another mention for Dallas Green / City & Colour. The new album "Bring Me Your Love" is even better than the first album "Sometimes".
--- D
Edit: I forgot, Hayden - "Everything I Long For". Should come with a warning label, i.e. "Do Not Consume While Depressed"

When I was a wee bit underage, I snuck into a bar in Yorkville (the Flame? my memory fails me!), and saw Mainline. It was the first time I ever heard a Les Paul and a Marshall, courtesy of Mike Mckenna. Too cool.
Can't forget The Ugly Ducklings, such a great band.
I was fortunate enough to see them, and Mandala quite a few times.

Wow. Other than an apparant mutual appreciation of Neil Young, you and I have very different tastes in music.
After taking a peek at your list, I agree.

Wow - what great lists!
Even Leigh Ashford got a mention ("Dickens was a mighty fine man"). DOA as well (were they Canadian?)
Missing thus far, but surely not forgotten is any Jann Arden or Bare Naked Ladies .... how about Greatest Hurts and Gordon, respectively.
Wow - what great lists!
Missing thus far, but surely not forgotten is any Jann Arden ....
I'm not sure that Jann Arden has put out a single album that is an all time great, but her live one is lots of fun, (the commentary between tracks is worth the price of admission alone), and "Insensitive" is about as good as it can get for pop song writing. My Grandmother could have had a hit with that song.
FWIW, I have seen Jann Arden live more times than Rush. I say that proudly in a comfortable in my own sense of masculinity sort of way.

DOA are from Vancouver.

DOA are from Vancouver.
Minor brain cramp .... for whatever reason I was thinking of the song "DOA" by Bloodrock.
Gimme a break - I'm old enough to remember Leigh Ashford after all (course, I can't remember what I had for lunch )

I'm considering swapping one of the Tragically Hip's earlier albums for one of the ones I listed.
Or maybe Thunderface (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJQc73z2VIw)
(except they never did an album)
or Thundermug (http://www.canadianbands.com/Thundermug.html)

If Heart are considered Canadian, then I'd add Neko Case to my list as well.
Heart spent a lot of time in Vancouver as draft dodgers (I think that was the reason) before they returned to Seattle and recorded Dreamboat Annie (a fave album, but I don't really consider it Canadian). They played around where I lived in Nanaimo a lot, and were great-lots of Zep covers I recall, and we were ALL in love with the sisters Wilson! LOL!
Anyways, on to the list, in no particular order (and there are some artists that I just can't decide which album is best, so I am cheating and just including them all):
Max Webster-Max Webster, Mutiny Up My Sleeve, A Million Vacations, High Class In Borrowed Shoes
Headpins-Turn It Loud
Bryan Adams-Reckless, Cuts Like A Knife
Trooper-Two For The Show, Thick as Thieves, Knock 'em Dead Kid, Flying Colors, Trooper
Jerry Doucette-Mama Let Him Play, The Douce Is Loose
Uzeb-Noisy Nights
Guess Who-American Woman
Doug And The Slugs-Slugcology 101 (yeah, I know it's a greatest hits, so sue me!)
Carole King-Tapestry
Loverboy-Loverboy (sorry!)
There are SO MANY-it's hard to cap it at ten:
Colin James, Alannah Myles, Streetheart, Honeymoon Suite, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, Alain Caron's Le Band, Lighthouse, Rodrigo (a local spanish guitar whiz), Pat Travers, Chilliwack, Prism, BTO, Mahogany Rush, Goddo, Powder Blues, Ian Thomas, Sue Medley, Gary Comeau, Harlequin, it's hard to stop! I've lately been thinking that a lot of these bands are still touring after all these years-wouldn't it be great to have a weekend festival (I know that sounds a bit 60's-ish) and have ALL of them together at once? I'd go!

I'm all for making Heart honourary Canadians.
I whole heartedly second that motion, then I can add about 3 or 4 of their albums to my growing top ten (yeah right!) list!

Wow, this has been enlightening...I'm sorry to say I guess I dont listen to that much Canadian Music, and at the same time have a hard time thinking of any Canadian "perfect albums", the way I think of say, Def Leppard Pyromania or Queensryche: Mindcrime.
I'm horrible with album names so I'll just list the bands (it should be pretty obvious which were their big albums anyways, in most cases).
Rush: Moving Pictures
Harem Scarem
Triumph: Allied Forces
Saga (my first concert)
Bare Naked Ladies (take your pic)
Sum 41 (cant believe noones mentioned them yet or The Tragically Hip)
Colin James
Alanis Morisette
Avril Lavigne (I'd actually put her down twice...pun and double entrendre intended :))
Lee Aaron (Body something or other)
Sven Gali: Under the Influence
Amanda Marshall had a good one a few yrs ago as well.
Philosopher Kings
Simple Plan's current one
If Heart counts, so should Skid Row because they'd be nothing without Sebastian...and if so, I'd include self-titled.
