i have a couple of question regarding epiphone les pauls...

1. is the custom the best one of the les pauls (not including the eltitists)?
2. is the elitist les paul much better than the normal one?
3. whats the difference between the custom and the custom plus??

1. From what I've seen and read (and noodled on), It think the difference is cosmetics - same pups and hardware.

2. Way better. Same or better quality as a US Gibson at almost half the price. I played a really nice Elitist SG a few times.

3. Fancier finish.

I have an Epiphone Les Paul Standard that I picked up for next to nothing. I swapped the stock pickups and electronics for genuine Gibson stuff and the thing sounds fantastic. IMHO I don't believe the difference in price is really worth it...Unless of course you have plenty of spare coin.

I think the non-elitist range is all pretty comparable. You'll get a nice top on the custom, but it's still made of slabs of mahogany glued together.

2. is the elitist les paul much better than the normal one?
I think so. 1 or 2 piece bodies. Solid caps. USA hardware. They rival Edwards and older Tokais for bang-for-your-buck.

Obviously, the price dictates the level of refinements.
The best upgrades you can make are to install Genuine Gibson pickups into any model of Epiphone for killer tone! :food-smiley-004:

Ever considered an Epi Les Paul Ultra?

I just got one and I'm very pleased with it. Less weight, contoured back, satin neck finish, good sustain and a reasonable price.

Too bad it is only available in one finish...and I'm not a big fan of gold hardware.

Just a thought.

For what I know 'cause I have one right now, the Custom plus have the flame maple top! For the reast it the same thing! I choose that one cause it's the nearer of a normal Les Paul!

You should check out the Japanese made Epiphone LTD ED LP LQ. LQ stands for 'lacquer finish'.

Another vote for the Les Paul Ultra. I bought one this spring and really dig it.

Something just came to mind here: the Ultra and Elitist bodies might be one and two piece affairs. I know the standard Epi Les Paul body is made from strips of mahogany glued together. Personally I'd pay extra for a one or two piece body instead of a 5 or 7 piece body.

On the Ultra, I'm not sure how many body pieces it actually has, but much of any of the pieces is missing...it is highly chambered. There is an x-ray of of the Ultra's body somewhere on the net...very cool.

if you can get an elitist LP, get it. doesnt really matter which one :P

i believe the elitists are made in japan? i've played 1 elitist SG (neighbour's) and its the nicest SG i've ever played.. there's a gibson standard in the basement here. it rivals it.

as for custom vs custom plus, the custom plus has a flame maple top i believe.

I've got one of the SG Elitist's too! Excellent guitar.
I've been saving for a Gibson Goldtop reissue but I am seriously considering going for an Elitist Goldtop instead!

You mean the pickguard?

Maybe Marlon is seeing the white laminate of the pickguard as though it is a white tremelo bar ??? Just a guess...after looking at the Epi. pic on their website.

He he......yeah you can.

I used to feel the same way when I was younger? Now I like it! It gives it a more classic look.

Its a great guitar, if you don't mind that you may end up with a scratched or dented guitar. The price is good on those because they are blemished or the guitar has been returned. The thing is, you can end up getting a great deal because it was just an returned guitar.

Just picked this up used at the L&M sale in a killer blue color for $350. You can tell the guy took care of it, the setup is new the strings are fresh and the neck has been oiled. Also looks like it has been stored in a case or bag, none of the chrome has any of the polution film on it.
Its in Mint Mint shape and is a 2007.

Took the pickguard off and polished it, it is really shiney and as smooth as my girls legs!!
Next want to get rid of the cream colored pickup surrounds to black and change the knobs to clear or chrome.

I know you want a new guitar, but, the local (Toronto) craigslist always seems four or so used Gibson LP Studios listed. Some ask for too much, but good going price is about $800.

Yesterday, I noodled on a Studio Mahogany at 12th Fret. It was $929 new. Difference is that it is carved mahogany top instead of maple top on mahogany. Less labour - keeps the cost down. This one was nice. But 12th fret always has their guitars well set up. When the Stones are in town, rehearsing for tours, they take their guitars to the guys upstairs.

I would replace the nut first with a good bone nut. Then I would see if the tuners need to be replaced. The nut has often been overlooked as the source of tuning problems. People replace the tuners first thinking that is the problem, when it was the nut in the first place - strings catch in the cheap nut during turning, then slip with a good bend - gives you the idea the tuners are slipping.

this is my final decision for sure!!!!!!

i was wondering, does a used les paul just look a bit worse or does it play worse too????

what do you guys think is nicer wine red, ebony, or fireburst?????
i will chose one of those colours...

Budda

it doesnt matter what we think looks best, its you who has tolive with it not me.

if the neck needs work then it'll play worse, but a few scratches etc shouldnt affect the playability. hence trying it out before ya pay
