This weekend I purchased an Ibanez Artcore Custom AF125 hollow-body guitar. I was assisting a friend who was looking for a starter guitar. He took it off the rack, handed it to me, and asked if I would try it out.

>From the moment I plugged it in, I knew I would be adding yet another guitar to my crowded collection.

The fit and finish of this guitar is truly impressive. The quilted maple is wonderful, and the build quality seems to be immaculate. I could find no flaws. I usually get my guitars adjusted immediately, but there were no obvious defects. No buzzing strings, no intonation problems.

However, the removal of some foam that was fitted to protect the finish in transit will require that the strings be slackened, and then a setup will almost certainly be required to fix the intonation afterward.

The tuning knobs were smooth in operation, with no skips or jumps.

The clean sound through a Line6 Spider III amplifier was smooth and lush, and, when distorted, it had a beefy presence that rang beautifully. Most importantly for me, the sound when strummed gave a feel that had eluded me with other electric guitars. I'm sure that a lot of that came from the hollow body design and the strings in question.

I would say that the placement of the 1/4" jack was not a great choice for sit-down sessions. For standing up it's fine, but when sitting I find it gets in the way.

This guitar seems to be worth much more than the asking price. For those familiar with the AF105, I believe that this model is nearly identical, differing only in finish and pick-guard colour.
