I was looking for a Peavey Classic 30 but couldn't find a used one locally and shipping for the ones I did find didn't make the potential purchase a smart. Someone contacted me with a Delta Blues for sale so I decided to give it a try. I was impressed when I tested it out so I picked it up for $400. Now that I've had time to test it out further, I am really impressed.
The DB is a 30 Watt tube amp from the Peavey Classic Series. It has 1 15 inch with 3 12AX7 and 4 EL84. The current tubes in the amp are all Sovtek and although I do have some spare JJ's and GT's I'll leave these in for now. It also has reverb and Tremolo.
The clean channel sounds great with single coils and humbuckers alike. The dirty channel can have just a little dirt or all out distortion (depending on the guitar). With an Epi LP equipped with Gibson 490R/498T I can get very close to the classic Randy Rhodes sound - still needs a bit of boost to put it over the top.
Just for the hell of it I added a 1X12 Traynor cab loaded with a Tone Tubby. WOW. Cranked the clean channel up to 6 and played some single notes on the E A and D strings and could feel my intestines shaking.
The reverb sounds great to my ears. Although I've never used Tremolo before, I found that it sounds pretty good.
I tried a bunch of pedals with it and found that it took pedals really well. But...I can get the tones I want out of it without the use of pedals. Even better.
You can easily play Jazz, Blues and Classic Rock through this amp. You'll need a pedal for metal.
To me, this amp (and the Peavey Classic Series in general) is an incredible value for the money. You can coax all kinds of sweet tones out of it at more that reasonable volumes. I was a little reluctant to even try it because it had a 15" speaker but...I'm glad I did. The added 1X12 cab just put it over the top. It's a sweet set up.
I am sure there are amp that can bury this thing in terms of tones but they probably cost 5 - 10 times as much. This is a perfect amp for someone looking for great tone at a reasonable price.
