For a violin you could always pull a EVH / Malmsteen... use a delay and work the volume pot with your pinky, that's always fun. If you don't have the volume knob close enough you could always use a volume pedal.

There's the Boss Slow Gear (http://www.noiseguide.com/product_info/boss_slow_gear_sg1) if you don't want to fiddle with the volume pedal. It's an envelope filter, like an auto-wah, but it swells volume instead of sweeping a bandpass filter. Guyatone has reissued it (http://guyatone.com/Sv2.php).

The simplest way to get violin and/or steel guitar swells is with a volume pedal.


It can be done with the volume knob on your guitar but that takes a bit more skill and is a bit more limited.
