If Kelly isn't careful, she's gonna start looking like Jann Arden in no time.
Good performance by the both of them though.

I'm not really a fan of Jeff or Kelly, but good is good.

This sort of reminds me how I felt when Jimmy Page teamed up with Puff Daddy. Jesus Christ, Jeff Beck had no reason to that.

Wow Kelly can sing eh????
And as we know Jeff can play (understatement of the century).
Geez I wonder if Jeff would come on Canadian Idol??????
Is the new CD you are talking about the live one from last summer with Vinnie Colaliuta and Pino Palladino?

I don't know much, but I don't see the problem with a mature, accomplished musician like Jeff Beck taking someone like Kelly Clarkson under his wing and injecting a little class into her.
If the older generation doesn't pass on or clue the younger generation into their music, then a whole genre of music will simply fade away and be forgotten.
... taking someone like Kelly Clarkson under his wing and injecting a little class into her.
...............nah, too easy.

and I thought I was being subtle...
Kelly Clarkson won the Grammy in 2005 for best pop vocal album. Also nominated that year in that category was Paul McCartney.
I'd say Ms. Clarkson has earned the right to a little respect.

I just find it totally bizarre how a guy like Jeff Beck felt the need to do something like this? He's seemingly never had the slightest interest in mainstream acceptance, post Yardbirds and Jeff Beck Group anyhow. Peter Frampton I could see doing this, Jeff Beck - not so much.

Perhaps JB believes in the cause? Jeff Beck played for Amnesty International in "The Secret Policeman's Ball" events. Idol Gives Back is not his first charity gig. As schlocky as American Idol can be, (it's TeeVee entertainment, disguised as a singing/popularity contest), they managed to reach a HUGE audience.
I've heard Bono tell the story of the man who wanted Bono to take his child so the child could have a quality of life unheard of in Africa before, but MILLIONS more people heard that story for the first time on Wednesday. For many people who contribute to Idol Gives Back, it may be the first and only time they contribute to a global charity. For some it just might be the starting point of a lifetime of social conscience and community activism.
At this point in his career, I would guess Jeff Beck has few needs. There are, however, MILLIONS of children in Africa that do have immediate and pressing needs. Jeff Beck participated in an event that raised awareness of a global problem in an audience that probably didn't know the problem existed. And that event, along with awareness, raised millions of dollars.
I find it bizarre that someone might say no to an event of this magnitude.

I forgot that this was a charity show...I'll give him a pass on that and that alone.

P.S. Because Jeff Beck really requires my approval.

Any chance to see Jeff Beck on TV is a plus. I can't say I'm a fan of Kelly Clarkson, but I thought she sang her ass off.

...jeff has earned the right to do anything he wants. he has absolutely nothing to prove.

I agree with you, David, but I still have the right to think it's cheesy.

American Idol and Jeff Beck do not mix! That show stands for everything wrong in music (and society!) today.

...its entertaiment, nothing more. its a "talent contest" aimed at mainstream audiences and mainstream...um...tastes.
that said, i don't have much problem with jeff trying to sell a few records. he has a lot of hot rods to feed.

American Idol, (and Canadian Idol), is what it is. It's entertainment television. I've watched intermittently through all of th seasons. In season 1 I remember the big band show, the only one where they used live musicians that year. I knew instantly that Kelly Clarkson would win. Since then we've seen the kind of careers the winners and also-rans have had.
I find it very difficult to believe that ANYBODY on this forum would turn down Ricky Minor if he asked you to play in the house band for AI. I find it impossible to believe that ANYBODY on this forum would turn down the opportunity to be a featured accompanist with a multi-platinum selling, grammy winning vocalist, especially in front of a TeeVee audience of millions.
How many hundreds of thousands of music fans, (and despite the format of AI, the audience is essentially filled with music fans), how many hundreds of thousands of music fans heard Jeff Beck for the first time EVER on Wednesday? If 1% of the viewing audience went out and bought a Jeff Beck CD because of that one appearance, how many CD's did he just sell?
Oprah has frequently said that luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Obviously a musician as skilled as Jeff Beck is prepared for almost anything. He was offered the opportunity to align himself with a decent charity, and expose himself as a musician to a new audience, an audience that is slavishly devoted to the show. An audience that doesn't channel surf during the show.
Some here call it cheese, and may think American Idol is beneath Jeff Becks status and stature as a guitar hero and musician. I think Jeff Becks appearance on AI is/was an effective marketing tool, and a wonderful opportunity to create and share some music that will likely never be replicated or repeated.
Does anybody here have a contact # for Ricky Minor @ American Idol? I'd love to audition for the house band.

Paul, your post proves we all have a different point of view - which is more than fine. I for one am glad that I only play for the love of playing and don't have to play to pay the bills. If I did my family would starve because I'm extremely opinionated with my musical likes and dislikes.
I'd turn down a gig on American Idol faster than you can say "At least we're not discussing The View".
