GIBSON SG Standard

Hello!

Can someone please help me date my SG? (Yup, she's a handful!)

The Serial No. is 129721. The gent at the guitar shop says it was built in 1973. I just wanted to know if anyone can verify this for me? According to many reference sites, the Gibson Serial No. 1xxxxx with the "Made in USA" stamp could be anywhere from 1970 to 1975. Someone, anyone, please shed some light on this subject!

you can go on the Gibson site. THey put a little tutorial to help people to find the years of their guitar. I don't know if it what you expect to but it's could be really useful ! Good luck !

I still need help verifying her age...should I call Gibson?

Just got off the phone with Vince from Gibson (Great guy btw) and he verified that the GIBSON SG Standard was indeed built between 1970 and 1975. To verify (and I can't believe I missed this step..., but hey so did the guys in the Les Paul forum...lol) he said to take off the control panel and check the date of the CTS pots! DUH!?!?!?!

FYI, the CTS pots are indentified as such:

CTS Year Week
137 XX XX
So mine are: 137 73 25 (See the pix)

Which would indicate the 25th week (3rd week of June) and 1973 as the year! So, she'll be turning 34 this June!

Just be happy you still had original pots in there.

BTW, if you ever change the pots, keep the old ones on hand for proof of year.

I'm surprised you didn't get that answer on the LPF, that question comes up about once a week on Norlin era guitars.
