View Full Version : One more for The Low Down
Hi all. My story's pretty similar to Michelle's - played, job, family, playing again.
I'm primarily a bass player, late 30s, located in lovely southwestern Ontario (er, lovely if you like topographically-challenged flatlands that is :-)
Played the last couple of years with a local classic rock outfit but recently resigned (we had all the bookings I wanted and the money was as good as you can expect these days, but I got really bored of playing to 20-30 people some nights until 2am ... a topic covered rather extensively in other forum threads I see).
Nice place you have here! Not sure how I ended up here - I was sifting through bar listings to see if my old band was playing anywhere local tonight so I could catch a set and I ended up here. Go figure!

Who was your old band?
Who was your old band?
"Suite Kaos" ... yeah I know ... they already had the name when I hooked up with them. You?

Name doesn't ring a bell.
I joined a band a couple years ago with a name worse than that - "Frozen Rotten". Still playing every other weekend or so doing the classic rock thing. Getting kinda stale. I need to start networking again. Supposed to jam with "Mario" in the next couple weeks.
I'm pretty much the same story as you. Played the London scene in the late 80s/early 90's, took a number of years off, then started again about 5 years ago. Have managed to get in on the HCBF SX bass craze as well.

Just casually. I play classic rock with some guys in London in a basement envrioment. I also play fairly often with some guys in Strathroy.( Super Casual) we have never had a practice but play at a Cafe for a couple of hours every 2nd Saturday evening. I travel a lot with work so it's one of those if I'm at home I sit in type things.

That's the fairly new cafe on the corner that used to be the police station? I've seen it and heard some tunes coming from there. I work in Strath, and my band is based out of Strath as well.

Sorry Dave, Classic Rock & Blues! I likes me some Blues.
James, don't buy Dave's humble pie routine. We may not be a working band but amature hour they certainly are not.

Right on.
Now that we've totally derailed this thread...
We are starting to get enough numbers that we could eventually get a forumite jam night going some day.

Sounds like you're selling yourself short.
As far as London area forumites on here, it would indeed be a little heavy in the lower registers.
...and just to add further "strathness" to this thread I live in Strath and work in London. Small world.
How'z the cafe thing work Lowtones - Darren hosts these doesn't he? Is the place open at the time or is it an after hours deal? If it's open when are you there next?

Mark's actually on a plane to the States right now but to the best of my knowledge he plays on Saturday nights when he's around and it's definitely open. Not sure if he'll be playing this week but he will be back on Friday. He keeps trying to talk me into it but I'm a bit self conscious about my abilities (or lack thereof)

Well, an open jam at a small cafe like that would be perfect for you. If you screw up, just sneak out the door. I have to imagine you are much better than you are giving yourself credit for though. The nerves at first might be a bit overwhelming, but once you get a taste of playing live, you'll be hooked.

It's coming. We're playing at the Richmond on the 23rd from 3:00 till 6:00. If I could just hang back and play guitar It wouldn't be too bad, but handling the vocals as well .... :frown:
On the plus side I'll probably know most of the crowd so it should be a good laugh if nothing else.

It's open when we play. Darren does host it and we were supposed to play last night but there was a trip to the hospital by the other fellow who plays guitar & his lady. Something about going into labour. Wimps. So probably next Sat. at around 8:30. Great meals at that place take your favorite lady for dinner. He also has a liquor license. Stay and play some music. I might have to play with davetcan and the boys that evening.(unknown) If so go and play with those guys. They don't do anything difficult. If I am playing there stop in a do a few tunes. It's very very casual and quiet.

Nope - but I know who you are talking about. He was with the Sydenham River Boys last time I saw them at the Derby. Rui's dad replaced me on bass when I stepped out of my last band and to my knowledge he's still playing with them as well as doing a two-man show called "Mid Life Crisis".

I've heard he's a decent player. Been jammin with a drummer I work with, but I don't think they have anything off the ground.

Hey Hush; Great to have another bass player on board, and it's great to know that what is happening with 'getting back into it' is a lot more common than I thought, not just me, it's a calling!. Now about that plot.....

The Day the Bass Players Took over the World LYRICS
source:Trout Fishing In America Time:2005-08-10
(E. Kaitz)
The day was very subtle, everything was low-key,
And everything slowed down to a slower frequency,
The sky it was so overcast that you could barely see,
The day the bass players took over the world.
The day the bass players took over the world.
Well, they came pouring out of symphonies, orchestras and bands,
And every other kind of combo that was ever known to man,
So they kidnapped the horn section,
And although it was spontaneous, you'd think it was quite planned,
Now one day the bass players, they decided to uprise,
They were tired of being sidemen to all those other guys.
With their big ol' flat-wound strings.
And on that day the world it was finally set free,
They put drugs in the drummer's drink,
All the creatures they hung out together and interacted fretlessly,
And they tied up all the guitar players
And the air began to vibrate with such a deep tonality,
The day the bass players took over the world.

Cool Lowtones! Don't worry PaulS, really, as a bass player, I don't want to take over the world. I think we only want equality and to dispel the myths about bassists like we don't move, I can't stay put when playing, get tangled in the cord and stuff. Or that we are 'weird', well, ok, got 'me' on that one. That we are 'frustrated guitarists', Jimi was a frustrated guitarist and pretty awesome on bass. Or that we harbour negativity towards guitarists.
Nothing against guitarists, in fact, I actually have a few friends that are guitarists. I fool with guitar and like to make a lot of noise, just to unload but I'll never be a serious guitarist, not with these nails, bass is my place.
Good thing about being the bass player? Well, there is usually only one bassist in a band so there ain't no pissin' matches and I've never had to show anyone I know how to play 'Taking Care of Business'. ah-hahaha
SeeYa!

Jeesh, there's a lot of people from Strathroy/London.
I'm from Strathroy I suppose...
I moved to London 3 years ago, so it call it home now, but I used to do some stuff in Strathroy during my teens. Played the Derby a couple times, and Leos fairly regularly near the end of my last band.
I'm in a London band at the moment, per say, but it's limited at best. I've just commited to play lead guitar again for when we defend our title of 'champion' at the "Battle of the Bay Street Bands" in February. We're called Prime, and I'm the youngest member by far. :food-smiley-004: We're a classic rock cover band doing stuff like Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Kiss and the Hip.
As for full time band at the moment, I always love to jam, but school takes up pretty much all my time.

We definitely need to set up a jam sometime...
Dirty Frank, Dave T, Mario, myself holding down the lowend, perhaps Hush can join us.
If we hurry, we can hold title to the first GuitarsCanada meet'n'greet'n'jam.

To my fellow bass brethren...
Why isit that this forum seems to be FULL of us? Could it be that we have no social skills, or is it simply because we have heightened computer skills??
I've been in a few garage bands with a bunch of Eddie Ray Malmsteens :rockon2: and my best band so far is the one I'm in now. Unfortunately, our singer got married, so the wife pulled a big Yoko so now we're looking for a new singer.:2guns:
So, if anyone knows anyone decent, into punk and alternative, in their mid 20's to early 40's in the Mississauga/Oakville are, gimme a holler please.
Cheers.
