View Full Version : LP Pickups ?
I have burstbuckers on my Standard LP right now; however, the bb's are not doing it for me. I am looking for a dark bridge tone, dark pickups for heavy power chords rhythm and lead. I looked into SD Alnico II; however, I want to get somewhat the Doug Aldrich sound, he uses custom John Suhr pups. Any recommendations ?

ya what he said ... three times..... a pleasant experience. Thinking of building a guitar just to try out his humbuckers

Maybe you don'tneed to change pickups. Maybe all you need to do is change the passive electronics around them so that certain parts of the sensed signal are simply not part of the output signal.

How about Suhr Doug Aldrich pickups?
Have to warn you though...I use them and they are NOT dark sounding pickups at all. The bridge is as bright as a JB....more lows but there are a lot of upper mids and highs in teh Aldrich set.
In the past Doug has also used the Duncan CUstom Custom...which can also tend to bright sounds. Warm and bright but still bright.
Dont want to come across as crass but you have tried turning those round things on your amp right....you know? the knobs.

I've also replaced my Burstbucker Pro's in my Les Paul. They seem to have a harshness that can't simply be dialed out. I find pick ups have their own character that will be there no matter what amp or setting you dial in.
I've got a SD Seth Lover in the neck & a SD Custom Custom in the bridge.
Pretty happy with that combo!
Cheers
