So here's the deal.

My friend just bought an orange thunderverb200 to replace his 6505+. The cab he was running the 6505+ through was a Marshall 1960A Hand Wired cab which is only 120watts.

Now those who are familiar with the thunderverb200 know that you can run it at 200watts with all four tubes running or run it at 100watts with just 2 tubes running.

The problem is I think he will blow his cab is he runs it at 200watts and told him to stick to running it at 100watts and he thinks running it at 100watts would be bad for the head (don't ask me why) and he wants to run it at 200watts and wants to change cabs if he can't do so.

Can some one shed some light on the situation because we are both clearly uneducated on the matter.

Thanks

well...hard to say. i used to have a JCM 800 100 watt in a 4x25watt cab..that thing sounded AWSOME...and we did play freaking loud. it was a 70's cab.

Cranked to the point it would wreck a speaker would be loud enough to play a 5000 seater with no PA lol. Does he really have a place he can run it above say halfway up?

my questions are pretty much

will the 120watt cab blow running the thunderverb200 on 200watts at any volume?

and

will running the thunderverb200 at 100watts and 2 power tubes damage the head at high volumes?

i would simply replace the speakers in the marshall for higher-rated ones.

tell him to try and find 4x mesa C90's or Celestion classic lead 80's or WGS British Leads.

and i wouldnt go yanking 2 tubes out of that amp to cut the wattage down..
