I was just at Tome Lee Music and tried out the Carl Martin Red Repeat Analog Delay/Echo pedal. For $125, it's an amazing deal on a great pedal. It was easy to use, very musical and sounded absolutely perfect. With all the very expensive analog delay units out there (Maxon, MXR, Moog, old DM-2/3 etc.), this one is totally on par quality-wise at a fraction of the price. Plus: Chicken Heads!

Now that I've done some research on it, I'm picking one up tomorrow. Does anyone out there own one of these? Or another from the series? (Crush Zone, Surf Trem) If so, what are your thoughts?

Cheers!

Hi Weezy:

I'm down with that, I have the Red Repeat too, and I love it. Right price too. One of my better pedal buys.
Does everything well from long delays from Pink Floyd to Slapback. Even does a subtle reverb thing OK.

I'd like to check one out... but I'm pretty sure it's not a true analog design... the Carl Martin site is kind of vague and various forum posts lead me to believe it's an analog sounding digital delay. Did the unit seems sturdy? Some people seems to be mentioning some distortion present at high delay time settings... hear any of that?

I didn't notice any distortion... It seems solidly built, albeit a bit on the cheap side... which doesn't bother me. Your suspicions are correct: it is a digital pedal that's designed to sound analog, but you can get the crazy UFO sounds out of it just like a real analog pedal, but no modulations. Also, it's not true bypass.

Regardless, I was impressed with its sound - for $125 it's an excellent pedal.

I haven't noticed any kind of distortion either.
Something that did happen was that when I used a crappy 9V adapter, the unit would only work for about 30 sec then stop. I even tried to put in a battery, thinking that it might be the power supply, and still had the same result. Any kind of adjustment to the controls would not do anything. I took it back to the store to show them the problem, and they were surprised because they have never had a problem with Carl Martin pedals.

We tried it with a Boss adapter, and the pedal worked fine for longer than the usual 30 sec. I took it home and have since used only one of my boss adapters, and the problem has never reappeared for over a year.
Very strange...

I know that the pedal isn't true by-pass, but there is something I'm confused about. With the power supply unplugged there is no signal at the output of the pedal with the effect engaged (no surprise), but with effect disengaged and no power there is signal at the output. Can anybody chime in who knows about true by-pass versus not having true by-pass considering the situation above.

If someone wants one of these there is a used one at L&M Ottawa (Alta Vista) for $75.

Hey Mark!

The red repeat isn't a "real" analog delay. Essentially it is like the dano PB&J or danecho. analog signal path but the chip is digital. so your analog signal is always analog but the delayed signal is digital.

For an affordable real analog delay, the mxr carbon copy is really nice and they are really cheap.

The Maxon Ad999 is wonderful. The moog is probably top dog as far as what I've tried.

Hey Dave,

I actually found an old BOSS DM-3 analog delay and snatched it up for $100... a good deal I think... I really wanted a real analog sound so this one is perfect. It sounds great w/ my setup so far.

Thanks for the info!

When's nero getting back together and coming out west?

A hundred bucks for a DM-3 is a good score :food-smiley-004:

Not likely at this point. :) It was much easier to tour endlessly when I was 22.

I'd love to get back out west though.. maybe at some point I'll tour my solo thing out that way.

is themasses still going?
