Judging by your username and guitar, I'm assuming that you're into metal right? If so, you might be better off getting a SS amp. Haha this is one of the very few cases where I would recommend SS over tube :P. The new Vox ADVT-XL apparently have a nice array of killer distortion tones. You can probably get the 1x12 or 2x12 model with your budget.

I agree. I bet he'd LOVE a used Randall RG100ES head and 4x12 cab, I bought mine used for $550 a few years back and sold it for $600 last year, so the price is right up his alley. These amps were one of the ones Dime was known to play in his early day, so has that raunchy solid state distortion that was his "sound". Would go well with your Digitech effects. Check ebay (where I sold mine) and Craigslist. Here's a head: http://cgi.ebay.com/randall-rg-80-es-with-footswitch_W0QQitemZ150282588615QQcmdZViewItem?has h=item150282588615&_trkparms=72%3A1018%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A3%7C65%3A12%7C 240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&timeout=1218598161375
Not hard to find a Peavey or Ibanez cab or something used for 300 or so...I've seen some Marshalls in that price as well.

Yeah Dimebag himself played mostly SS Randalls throughout his career. He played some Krank tube amps towards the end of his career, but that brutal Dimebag tone that everyone knows is coming from a solid state Randall.

Lots of Fender amps can be found used for ~600. Not really metal amps without a distortion pedal pushing them but a Hot Rod Deluxe is a nice tube amp that can be used in most settings.

i disagree - pretty sure that an F-30, set up right, would burry a randall.
i've heard a randall sound good once, and it wasnt quite being used for metal. the guy knew what he was doing with the amp, clearly had it set up right for the music.
chances are, a halfstack will be overkill. a good combo will take down a budget practise amp most of the time. his budget would allow him to maaaybe get a decent head, and he'd still need a cab.

I see from another post that you are also a singer.
You might want to try something like a VOX Tonelab LE with a powered mixer and a set of monitors. That way you could add a mic and have everything you need. The total package might be a little out of your current budget, but once you have it all together you will be set.
I just picked up a pair of these, and for my purposes (I use them just for guitar - I don't sing but I did check them out and they are capable) they work great:

I'm not a big fan of the brand, but they only cost me $120 a piece at L&M. You could start with one, and pick up another when cash permitted.
You should be able to get your hands on a cheap 400 watt-ish powered mixer for about $250 or so, and a used tonelab I've seen for anywhere between $225 and $400.
