I play mainly country rock. My Dr Z stangray is great for that sound with mild break up. Now I need something with nice fendery super cleans like a twin. Of course I've been looking for something a bit more special than a twin. I had one earlier this year and found it harsh and ice picky. I t did not have the clarity I was looking for.
I was in L&M last week and saw an amp I'd never heard of. It was a Fender Dual Pro from the custom shop. Expensive and heavy but when I took an AV52RI off the wall and plugged in, it gave me the "WOW" factor right away. I put $100 on it to hold it and will be trialing it at a gig at the end of the month. The only concern I had was that maybe 100 watts is a bit too powerful and I might be better off around the 60 watt zone. I've tried a bunch of amps from the Fender Pro series line, I've tried a Mesa Lonestar that is available for me to use at band practices but haven't come across anything with that same magic.
If anyone has any recomendations of amps that are meant for super clean (Tube) I'd like to hear them. My budget is $1,800. Must be tube, must have 2X12 speakers and preferably combo.

If you are looking for "clean", then you can't have too much headroom. The difference between 60 Watts and 100 Watts is less than 3dB.

100 Watts is fine.

+1. My YGL-3 mkIII definitely won't start breaking up on it's own at a reasonable volume until you stick a pedal ahead of it. If you want a squeaky clean amp, headroom is the way to go.

As for the Twins, was it a modern reissue you tried? Maybe see if you can track down an older one to check out. I also recall someone on here has a '57 reissue Twin for sale that made me drool quite a bit.

Thanks Paul. I will probably be all right with the Dual Pro 100 watt. It sounded great in the music store even just under 2. Sometimes high powered amps sound too thin unless you can get the volume up a bit. I know I'll never get this amp to 3 anywhere I play. The FAT switch seemed to round it out even at the low volume.

The one I had earlier in the year was "The Twin". Didn't like it at all. I have owned the 65 RI Twin and although much better wasn't quite it.

Yup, that makes sense. Those red-knob versions aren't good for much other than being really loud.

Here's a link (http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/twin_redknob.html) I've also heard of these bad boys being called Evil Twins. I played through one that a friend of mine owned way back when. Loud and proud, but not much with the tone.

The plus side is that they can be had real cheap. I see them listed for $400-600 every so often. I don't know what makes them different from actual Twins or Twin RIs, but I assume they can be modded to sound decent if you're so inclined.

Not to insult, but you may want to keep your eyes open for a Fender Performer 1000: tube pre ampwith SS power stage. I had one for a while and really regret selling it because it had the sweetest clean tones I've ever heard. The distortion channels were typically buzzy, but clean this thing was great. The Tube front end was rich and the SS power stage just let you pull the level up or down to whatever volume you wanted.

Y'know.....I'm starting to think that Terry could re-think his approach. I have NO experiences whatsoever, but the AxeFX unit, along with some full range powered monitors might be the best way to find the tone & response he's looking for, in a much more portable package.
