Been trying to play six-string since 1966, still working at it.
I collect guitars, and recently picked up a quite rare ex-catalogue 1965 National Chicagoan lap steel in mint condition, one of less than 30 made of that particular line, apparently. I've been looking for info on how to play the damn thing, found this site so I signed up.
Later days...

Chilliford? Where's Chilliford? Is that a really extreme typo? I grew up in Chilliwack
Anyway, welcome to the forum

Abbotswack, Chilliford... it's an old, bad joke. I'm actually a lot closer to Geek's locale, Rosebush.

Hey Fraser, saw your thread about the Chicagoan when I was researching the one I picked up. They're almost identical, except mine has a foil tag serial #1-18469 on the top of the headstock, and the volume and tone pots are dated the 1st & 3rd week of Jan. 1965. (Props to Kim at justguitars.com.au for helping to identify it).
I really like the sound it makes, but I need to get some instruction on lap steel playing technique and stuff, any suggestions for a beginner?
Regards....

well, id start with tunings-
http://www.well.com/~wellvis/tuning.html
just like on regular guitar, i use open g, open d, open c mostly
if you dont have one, get a decent tuner, and try some tunings- pick 2 or 3 and just work with them until your comfortable-
if you find one that you sound best using, go with it for a while- thing with tunings is learning a new one is almost like learning a new instrument
more tunings-
http://eceserv0.ece.wisc.edu/~sethares/alternatetunings/alternatetunings.html
this forum has some great info- look for the steel without pedals forum-
http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/index.php
i never was able to find much out there about how to play it, i just sort of adapted the knowledge i had of regular guitar and bottleneck and spent hours n hours trying things- im a passable lap slider now i guess lol-

Howdy again, fraser... I am familiar with open tunings, play a bit of six-string slide (not well, but I try), and yep, got a tuner... been playing/collecting for too many years... I'm looking for advice on technique; positioning/slanting the steel, picking, that sort of stuff. I can do a reasonable facsimile of Jimmy Page's "In My Time of Dying" so far, but that's about it. Having fun trying, though.
Thanks, & later days...

Hmm, let me guess... Yarrow? I use to live off Keith Wilson, right by the canal, so I guess I was a chilliford as well, but really considered my self from Abbywack though. :)
Glad to have you aboard.
My vote is Greendale.

Nah, they have no donuts. I usually opt for a lemon loaf or have them make a sandwich, mainly 'cause I'm a cheap bugger XD

Thou dost write with much wisdom. All mankind will seek out yon flowers with their eyes. To look, and only to look, is the way of any mortal.
Go past that and you are "dead man walking"
