this is my first time on these forums and i was hoping for a little help/guidance

i am completely new to bass
i know absolutely shit about it but i am looking into learning it

my problem right now is, i have to buy one
and i wanted to know what's a good brand, how many strings should i have(lol i hope that made sense), what's a good amp etc.

it would be nice if anyone could direct me to any sites that give information or that sells basses.

i hope i didn't leave anything out..
well, thanks in advance to anyone who helps!

edit: i forgot to add, i'm on a tight budget..
something inexpensive please? XD

and if it helps, the sound of the band i'm in is like.. Meg and Dia, Flyleaf and Paramore
you can go youtube those bands or something lol

There's lots of good gear out there. Do you have a friend that plays bass? Try their gear out?

I would suggest you hit the music stores and get your hands on everything you can to see what is comfortable for you. You don't necessarily have to buy new, but at least know what direction your tastes are taking you.

The new Fender Squire Vintage Modifieds are nice. Entry level Yamaha, Ibanez, Cort etc... are decent as well. I would advise 4 string, but again, whatever is comfortable for you.

As for amp... Is this for bedroom playing, or are you jumping into a band right away or jamming with a guitard and drums? 200Watts should be your minimum.

Good to know you've taken up bass, it's mad fun. :sport-smiley-002:

If you're looking into buying a bass, I would recommend starting out with a 4 string, lol. Just something basic to get started out on. As for a specific brand, I can't really say anything (neither can anyone else, lol. It's all personal preference.) Go to a music store and check out a few basses. You want something that feels comfortable to play (obviously, haha,) and fits your budget. So it really depends on how much money you're willing to spend and what you want in terms of feel and whatnot. I prefer thinner necks myself, my hands aren't very large, and it's a bit easier to get around the fretboard. Haha. Anyway, good luck with finding a bass that's right you.

See you around the forums :food-smiley-004:

Unless you live way out in the boonies where there's
not much to choose from, best buy on a budget would
be a used bass. If you know how to check out a used
geetar it's much the same. I'll probably spend much
more per bass than I think you plan to spend, yet, to
me, buying a brand new bass is like some kind of last
resort 'Plan-Z', something to be strenuously avoided.
Basses are like money. Old money is good money :-)

Yep the Squier Vintage Modified basses are great. I've got a Vintage modified P-bass and it's great. Very easy to play, bang-on intonation, feels solid and doesn't sound half bad. I'm mostly a guitar player, but whenever I feel like dabbling in the low end, this bass does everything I ask of it and then some. The vintage modified series are much better than the standard Squiers. Going used is a good idea too though, saves you a boatload of money if you find a good deal.
