I'm trying to come up with my own entry! (Nothing yet)
That prize would pay off a lot of bills & buy some nice gear. And then there's the royalties afterwards as well--not sure how much that would bring the winner-I guess that depends how creative the CBC gets...

Of course, in my mind I'm going to compare any of the entries, and my own ideas, to the most recent theme. In keeping with that, if I do submit an entry--it would be an instrumental.

Heh, the highest rated song so far is a whopping 3/5.

If they want a brass laden vintage-era hockey song, they should try to get the rights to Brass Bonanza:

I haven't even looked at the website, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that the simple act of submitting a song assigns all rights in perpetuity to the CBC. This all happened because they were not interested in paying ongoing fees, remember?

In their FAQ there's mention of a 3 year period for not just the winner, but the finalists, where they can't release their own version of the song. I didn't ceck all the conditions--but that's in there. I don't know what it said about mere submissions. They also mention they would register the song with SOCAN, and the royalties would be split 50/50 between the writer(s) and charity.

So there are restrictions.
And that does bother me, but on the other hand I am not a professional musician or songwriter, so if I submit a song & it's chosen--it may not bother me too much.

There are 3 revenue streams available for a song like this. There is the publishing money, the songwriting money and the performance money. There's not too great a chance that an unknown winner will get to record his/her own version of the winning song. The publishing will be owned by CBC, and you have to give up 50% of the songwriting to minor hockey.

How much did CTV pay for the original theme???? Methinks CBC is being less than generous with this contest.

I agree.
But if I were to enter it, it would most likely be a one-off, and the prize and 50% royalty would most likely be more than what I'd make off all other songs I've ever written or will write in my lifetime. On that basis it's not a big deal for me, but I certainly understand where it would and SHOULD be a bigger deal for others.

I do think some entrants are probably unaware of this, and may come to regret entering.

But for me, the bigger kick would be knowing a chunk of Canada is listening to my song.

The downside is that they would likely be comparing it to the previous one, and quite possibly hating it.

Whichever song wins--it will get a tough ride, at least at first.

Mine is still not showing up...I uploaded sucessfully however I dont think i picked a genre when doing so...I had to make a few changes on my anthem anyway so i uploaded it again (revised version) and picked a genre this time...Hopefully that will do the trick.

There are like a hundred pages of songs on that site. I must say also that 3/4 of it is pure trash. It's going to take months to go through that stuff and find 10 or so contenders. There are people banging out tunes on $54.00 keyboards and putting it up there.

I finally have my first submission up and running...Still a work in progress though.

Its not up to professional standards or anthing however CBC will be re recording the winning song with real musicians anyway so I guess they are just looking for a hook of some kind.
