Who here prefers the 1X12 speaker configuration over the 2X12 based solely on sound, not convenience.
I have tried playing amps with 1X12 speaker configurations but felt the lacked so much and have always preferred 2X12. I'd just like to hear from those that actually prefer the 1X12 and why?

The 1x15" is my favourite combo amp format. I've got a 1x12 in my Trinity 5E3 kit amp, and that is the sound of a 1x12 5E3. Sometimes I think that some speaker combinations are what they are because that is what was necessary to dissipate the power. There just wasn't a good single 12" option for a 60 watt amp, so the designer used a 2x12 dissipating 30 watts each. The multi speaker option gives you some interesting effects, usually positive, due to coupling.
Try a 1x15" sometime if you can, you might be pleasantly surprised.
My Mesa MKIII as a 1x12, but it's a EVM 12L..and those suckers are LOUD..and sound so darn good. but i even bought another set of thieli to go with it..:)

I owned and actually really liked 2 1X15 amps in the past. One was a Gibson L9 Lab series that I picked up because my hereo at the time (Ray Flacke) had one. There was a short honeymoon period followed by the realization that I actually sounded more like him with a completely different amp. Then again I never really sounded anything much like him
Then there was a Musicman HD115 that was my favorite of the 2. In both 1X15 amps I found it hard to control the bottom end. I like a very fat sound but I have an easier time getting a tight bottom end with a 2X12.
I ended up using the musicman as for my keyboard sounds with a Roland D50.
I had the D50 midi'd with the Roland GP8 the D50 plugged in to the musicman and the GP8 plugged in the a Fender Twin. And of course the GK2 mounted on my strat. Back in the days when I loved the heavily processed sounds.
Life is so much simpler and enjoyable now.

Now that you mention Mesa, I remember playing a gig, years ago, way up in Huntsville, Ontario. On the matinee a guy came in to jam (very good player) and brought a small 1X12 Mesa, can't remember the exact model. He had a strat with EMG's and a rack compressor. The tone he was getting was phenomenal. Even with Mesa's I could never get 1X12 to work for me, but I remember going out and buying EMG's for my strat after that. I hated them.

I've got a Garnet Rebel II 1x12. It has an old RSC/Jensen in it and I love the sound of that amp. I have had some 1x12's over the years though that I was not overly struck on.

I'm a 212 kind of guy - i need that bass response!

same here, but bass mostly comes from the a closeback cab. a open 2x12 won't have to much bass compared to a 2x12.

very true - my buddy has an openback 212 combo for band practise, and it sounds really good but i can out-thump him pretty easily. we dont play music with melodic death metal palm mutes, so its all good haha
