How to Shop 4 Electrics and Amps

Hi! I played classic 4 about a year now and I'm going to get an electric and amp pretty soon. But what kind of factors and features am I suppose keep my eyes out for when I'm searching through stores? Also, which stores, in Canada or the US, have the best prices? While I was browsing, I found a $200 black American Standard Starcaster by Fender in Portland (where u don't need to pay taxes) with a basic amp. I thought it was a good deal but should I buy it?

I've heard these aren't great guitars. Don't know much about 'em. I'd get a Squier if you're looking for a cheap Fender. A Squier Strat is $200 brand new without the amp. You can also get it in a pack with an amp. The Squier Strat Pack was my first guitar. It's not bad.

I'm guessing you're paying 50-100$ just for the Fender name on that guitar. Shop around, you might be able to find a comparable guitar for a lot less money-it just won't say 'Fender' on the headstock...and if your computer is fairly fast, get a USB Di-Box, preferably one that comes with software (although there are tons of VST plugins that are freeware). It will will a lot more versatile than a similarly priced amp.
