I was at a BBQ last night and got the opportunity to listen to an interesting debate that developed.

If you are mixing and matching speakers in a 4x12 or 4x10, how to you situate the speakers? There were a few different schools of thought last night, which I found very interesting (I've never really given this part much thought, I just put the speakers in).

Do you keep the matched pairs together (top or bottom or sides) or do you offset the pairs with one of each? How do you guys do it?

no idea, but when I did mine I did them in a diagonal, my thinking was to 'spread" the sound but not to give one "type" of speaker preferential treatment...........interesting thread.

Yeah it's not something I had ever really thought about, but apparantly the guys last night had, it got fairly heated at one point, I kinda of enjoyed just sitting back sippin a pint and listening.

A heated argument about speaker placement... Is it really nerdy of me to think that's cool?

yes, because its kind of dumb lol - put them in different places until you find the sound you like the best.

all my speakers are the same, i have yet to mix and match. i'd try diagonal, and i'd try two top two bottom - and leave it with whichever setup sounded best.

Let's just say the two guitar players are "passionate" about their ideas. The best part was the third guy in the discussion was a drummer

It doesn't matter as only one speaker is getting mic'ed.
