Wow! To watch a funk legend tear it up is an honour. Great show, especially once the band loosened up after the break.

The drummer: is he left handed or right handed. I still don't know. I assumed he was a leftie playing a right handed kit until I saw him playing a wicked ride cymbal pattern with his right hand.

Guitar player: no pick! Also, playing thru a Marshall JCM 2000 4 x12! WTF? That's not a "funk" amp (unless you have amazing chops).

Just great.

I've tried to see him twice before. Once in Toronto in the early 90s but a snowstorm shut down transit. Once a few years ago in Edmonton when I first moved here but couldn't find anyone to go with (didn't really know anyone in town).

My fiancee didn't want to go but I phoned her midway through the first set and total her to come. She really liked it, even though you would hardly call her a funk fan. Pretty cool watching Maceo turn a sax solo into the Canadian anthem. Even cooler when he screwed up the last two notes and broke out laughing.

Regarding the Marshall, I too though it may have been a rental, but the bass players rig seemed like an "appropriate" rig. I think he is playing in Calgary so maybe someone here will check out the show and report back. Sad to think that a legend has to take cost cutting measures on the road.

Only time I've uttered the phrase, "man, cool trombone solo." Only time I've ever heard the "To be or not to be" soliloquy at a funk show: Maceo played a flute while their British manager recited.
