Well, they're coming along, but due to my schedule and my Dad's schedule, and now with summer and he spending more time at the cottage, we've only gotten together twice in the last 3 weeks. Couple more visits to his workshop and we should be done. Next week we'll cover them. Of course, due to my recent violation of the Ontario HTA, I don't have the money for the guts of the 1x15" for a few more gigs.

Here's some progress pics...

Since they are going to be covered in rat fur, my Dad's logo is on the inside.

A mock-up on the 1x12 so we could trace before getting out the jig-saw.

Very cool, can't wait to see more. I built some stuff with my dad as well (gym equipment) a few years ago. I drew pictures of what I wanted and we built it together with his tools and wood. What electronic hardware and speakers will you have in these cabs?

Building with my Dad is great! He's such a great wood-worker! I'm supplying him with the necessary schematics for cabs (Thiele & Small paremeters etc...) and a little bit of help. I need to stress the word little. :D I'm useless around power tools, but know what I want for my music gear.

Unfortunately, he bought 3/4" baltic birch ply thinking it would be better than 5/8 ply which was what I wanted as this is a weight saving project. On the plus side, these cabs are built like a brick shithouse and will not let me down I'm sure.

The cabs will be loaded with Neo speakers: 12" Eminence Deltalite II 2512, the other with a 15" Eminence Kappalite 3015LF.

I don't know if you've posted this already, but which head will you use to power them? What wattage will they be putting out? Do you have a ballpark price for each once they're done?

If I understood what was required to build a set of cabs (wood type, electronics, speakers, etc.) I could get my dad to build them (the wood part at least), but I know next to nothing about this stuff. Then I'd have to understand what head I'd need to power them. And in the end, would it save me money from buying it outright?

James: I'm a dummy. What is HTA? Something to do with speeding I gather, but what is the acronym? Were you 50Km/hr over the limit and into Street Racing fines?

Nice work on the cabs.

Most likely. I've looked at bass cabs and the mid to high end range seems to be about $400 to $1000 for even a 1x15.

Nice work on the cabs.

HTA = Highway Traffic Act. There was another thread IIRC about this.

They are turning out nicely. Would your dad be interested in doing any more?

Gunny, yes it was a speeding ticket. 37 over the limit. Got caught napping behind the wheel I guess.

For now, I am using my 800W Yorkville head to power the cabs. The plan is to pick up a GenzBenz Shuttle series amp. Hopefully I'll do that late in the summer.

For pricing, I'm definitely saving money, but spending a lot of time as well. I figure both cabs are going to come in around $625 for all the wood and supplies.

Will my Dad build anymore? Maybe. These cabs aren't even ready to make noise yet and I'm already thinking of what I'd want my 3rd & 4th cabs to be. lofu Who knows, maybe my Dad would be interested in putting some boxes together for others, but he'l have to adjust his labour rate first.

Great looking project James. Looking forward to seeing and maybe hearing the finished product. I love working on projects like that. Wish I had the time.

Got the 1x12 pretty much done tonight. Really sucks only getting an hour or so every week to plug away at them. Just need to get some connectors tomorrow so I can hook the speaker up to the Speakon connectors, and I should hopefully be able to try out the one cab at rehearsal tomorrow night. Pics to follow shortly.

Finished the 1x12 yesterday afternoon, took it to rehearsal last night, and in short - I am extremely happy with it!! I can't wait for the 15" to be completed!

It still needs to be cleaned from coming out of the workshop, but I couldn't wait to test it out and snap some pics.

Where'd you get the grill?

Congratulations on great looking cabs :banana:

Did you follow a specific plan for the porting (i.e., inside volume of cab requires a certain diameter and length of port placed such and such, etc) ?

Kevin O'Connor wrote a lot about this in one of his books. A friend of mine built a cab from his (O'Connor's) book and the porting makes it sound HUGE and much louder than expected (given the cab and speaker sizes).

Enjoy !!

I got the plan from a forumite over at HCBF. He's been making a lot of cabs lately, and the 1x12 he made really caught my eye. He was really adament I try the 1x15" he gave me the specs for as well, which I can't wait to finish.

I got all of the componants (minus the wood) from Q-Componants in Kitchener. The grills are quite cool IMO. They pressure fit onto a plate that bolts down with the speaker itself, so no grill holders or clamps are needed.

It looks totally pro. I'd like to see the same one painted black in lieu of the upholstery, but it's a bloody nice cab just the way it is.

Q Components is great by the way. They have lots of great stuff for building cases as well.

Nicely done! I like that the handle is mounted on the side, and it's beautifully finished. Have you weighed it yet?

I decided due to the small size of the cab that a strap handle would suffice. After reading that the only thing you disliked about your Bergie was the handle on the top, I decided to put it on the side.

My bathroom scale is broken, but I would guess the cab is somewhere between 35-40 lbs.

Nice job, looks very Pro. Now where's the Logo?

We need to all get one and circulate photos at other bass forums of us playing gigs with the logo (like Schroeder) prominent in every photo...James can then build these things full time...

Well, since the cabs are covered in rat fur, you can't see the logo unless you take the speaker out. :smilie_flagge17: I've been bugging my Dad that this could be a new enterprise for him - now his wife is telling him this would be a good winter project for him. He told me to go ahead and sell the cab if I want and we'll build more.

Ooh...nice and light. You won't have any problem carrying that around. I just had a thought James.....this ad comes up in the Toronto Craigslist from time to time;

It would be a shame if that great finish were damaged in any way. If those cabs were mine, I'd be looking at getting some custom covers for them. I'm anal about stuff like this. I ended up buying the Berg cover for my cab and I'm glad I did.

Good idea, but I've got gig money tied up for the next while unfortunately. I need to finish the 1x15" and get a rack case for my amp ASAP as I sold the rest of the gear and my old rack case, and I just can't seem to sell my amp.

If I see this picture correctly, the speakon connectors are proud of the back cover. Those are going to be what takes a beating when sliding the cabinets in and out of the vehicle.

If I don't see this picture correctly, nevermind.

Yes, they are mounted onto the back of the cab. I was toying with countersinking them somewhat, but decided not to. The cabinet is small enough though that I will be able to lift and set it down and not have to slide it in anywhere. I will take this into further consideration for the other, slightly larger cab though.

I was actually going to send you an email this weekend and see if I could come over some night next week before work to size that up with my amp. According to the specs it shouldn't work for an amp. If it works I'll get one ordered up. I appreciate the offer to let me borrow yours.

No completed pics as of yet sorry to say. The 2nd cab (1x15") was finished a couple of weeks ago, but still sits unloaded. I hope to order up the speaker for it in the next week or so.

The 1x12" sounds fantastic and I have used it a few times now. Twice by itself at rehearsals, and twice on top of the 2x12 Avatar cab for gigs. I am so anxious to try it out on top of the 1x15". I'm thinking this will be a killer rig.

James, what's your recommendation for a suitable amp head to run the cabs? Brand? Output (ohms, watts, etc.)?

Anything that sounds good. Right now I'm still using my 800W Yorkville and will be for the foreseeable future. The 1x12 is rated for 250W and the 1x15" is (will be) rated for 400W.

The 1x12" is an Eminence Delta Lite II and the 1x15" is an Eminence Kappalite3015LF. My scale is broken so I don't have exact weights, but they are light.

I've been using the 1x12 for a month or so now. Together these are going to be awesome. The 15" is just so low and thick sounding, the 12" so punchy and clear.
