Pamelia Kurstin plays the theremin at TED.
Such a far cry from Jimmy Page's fiddling with this thing...

That Ted.com site is not loading for me at all. I think this may be the same or similar from youtube:

Classical Theremin sound fine :) Though I also like the very outlandish Gabby Lala:

ted.com is a great site. I've waisted whole days there. Here's the rss feed (http://feeds.feedburner.com/tedtalks_video)...there's always at least a dozen things on there I want to watch. I'd only really ever heard the theremin as the WooowOWWOWoeeoeoeAow thing from Ed Wood movies and Jimmy Page/Whole Lotta Love. Interesting to actually hear someone playing music with it.

Pamelia Kurstin is pretty badass she recorded with Ulver on their last album.

More Theremin action, I present for your perusal Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria (my heroes) playing a Theremin with his hair during their 20 minute long encore jam "The Final Cut":

I saw them do this in Vancouver and it was amazing. Claudio and the keyboardist were having a back and forth theremin / keyboard dual I was just like :rockon2::rockon:

I just went to Kursten's MySpace site. Oh yes. I listened to all her songs there. Afterward, I felt like I had just come down from a mild acid trip (it's been 37 years, there weren't many, but you don't forget them.) She says he plays what's going on in her head. I think the inside of her mind must be a wonderfully creative, but very weird place. You click to her site and in her picture she has her finger up her nose.

...one of the most difficult instruments to play well. AND the only instument played without touching it.

Very nice clip. Thanks.

I've tried them, they're cool--but to play it like she does would take some dedication--and Page was more into the sound effects aspect of it--so in that context it was cool--but to play recognizable melody & harmony with it?

Even cooler.
