So, where do you folks buy pickups in Canada (online)?
Been looking online, and I'm nowhere near a meatspace store either -- best I've found so far is ebay from the US...where else to look?
Thanks

I've found that its cheaper (and better) to have them made by some of our fine Canadian pickup makers. I got JS Moore to make me a fantastic set of PAFs (http://tonefordays.com/) and I'll soon be getting a set of Strat pickups made by Jeff at Copperheadpickups (http://copperheadpickups.com/). I dont see why people pay top dollar for machine made pickups, when you can get hand wound, custom ordered pickups made here in Canada.
But hey ... thats just me ! !

Thanks for the info both...but still no go. I'm looking for those little lipstick tube pickups for a Danelectro. the only maker I can think of that does those is Seymour Duncan.

Neither axe or lamusic seem to have the lipsticks.
But look who does, everyone's fav. dealer:

Outside Canuckistan, there's always GFS, of which the quality I have no clue:

wwbw has the rev. wind duncan on for < $50:

Thanks Apostrophe ('), that does the trick.
$50 each is a good price.
...or as you say I could order from guitarpartscanada for more $$ and wait a year or two...
Cheers.

I bought
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/KeeperOfTheGood/GuitarsCanada/1227PICKJ1.jpg
from Bezdez. I have a *cough* really cheep Gibson/Baldwin student guitar (gotta love seconds! HATE the neck though) and swapping the pickup in it with one of these to me sounded the same. :/ That isn't saying a lot as I have not the wealth of experience yet to say one way or the other if that is good or not. However, having test driven a few of the other student/starter guitars at L&M I have to say this sounds better than the Squire or Epi's I tried.
This one was 25 for the pair. There is also another canadian on eBay I have bought from that sells a pickup that I think is a house brand but not sure, called CHOPPERS-MUSIC, their prices have gone up this year, but they too are not unreasonable in the face of some other sellers.
As to big machine wound or small machine wound pickups, I honestly don't know what the difference would be. The wire is the same, the length used is the same. I am more curious about the differene in tone a pickup would have if it was a post style and the posts were ovals rather than round with twice the string read length, or if they are bar styles if the bar was egg shapped (wider on one end than the other), with more read at the high end if better highs could come through. :/ the random things I think of eh!

Thanks for this idea! Think I will use JS Moore pickups in my new partscaster Tele which will be going together in the next few months.

Hey,
I just put a set of Dream 180's, from GFS, into my project Les Paul and these pickups sound great. $35 for each and fast shipping. I'd put these pups up against any model from one of the "boutique" companies. There's lots of different styles, so your sure to find something you like.
You should checkout the website.

I have purchased from this site before:

Great product!! The owner is a very nice person and certainly knows how to deliver good customer service.
I think I will try one of the Canadian makers next though...I do believe that variety is the spice!

Please...if you can...elaborate on your opinion of these pickups that you bought. I have just purchased an old Les Paul style guitar which needs pickups in a bad way. These might just be the ticket.

Sure. John has a number of basic winds which he can customize depending on your needs. Probably best to send an email describing what you're looking for and let ask the relevant questions. He'll ask a number of questions to make sure he understands what you are looking for.
I was looking for some basic PAF style pickups to replace the higher output jobs that someone had installed in my PRS. After much discussion with Jon, I ended up with this V59 set (8.3k bridge, 7.8k neck). He also recommends getting his pickups un-potted, which I did. I think this contributes to the "liveliness" of the pickups.
I'd buy pickups from Jon again in a second.

I have two sets from JS Moore: a V59 Alnico 2 unpotted (loaded on a semi-hollow) and a combo V59 in the neck with Alnico 5 and a high-output in the bridge with Alnico 8 unpotted as well (loaded on a solid-body).
If you loosely compare the specs with those of Seymour Duncan, the V59 is similar to the Pearly Gates when using Alnico 2 and similar to the 59 model when using Alnico 5. The high-output bridge pickup with Alnico 8 is quite nice and fat.
All the pickups that I have are 4-conductor and they split quite nicely.
I remember reading about some people with PAF-type mismatched pickups from Jon, maybe they can chime in about those pickups in case you are looking for the more vintage LP-type tone.

This is a pretty cool resource when deciding what you want to put in a guitar:
