Hi. My plastic nut came off of my acoustic guitar while I was re-stringing. I'll have to glue it back on. The question is, how do I centre the nut properly? I was thinking of either putting the nut on with a little glue, stringing guitar and allowing the nut to float to its natural position, then letting the glue dry, OR putting the nut on the guitar and feeling each edge so that each edge is the same distance to the outside of the fingerboard. I could also use a depth micrometer and depth mic this distance. That will centre the nut to the outside of the fingerboard, but not necessarily centre the string slots properly, if the nut was made a bit off centre to the string slots. I hope what I've written is clear.

if the nut was okay in the first place, I'd center it from the edges, with strings on and tuned to pitch, that'll hold it down into place.

use just a tiny bit of white glue, mix it down with a bit of water, maybe 1/2 and 1/2. It doesn't take much to hold the nut on, and you want to be able to remove it fairly easily if it even needs replacing.

You should also have mentioned that all the dry glue has to be removed. You can also use 2 small drops of crazy glue on each end that faces the fret board. It has to be flush with the fret board for proper scale length.
