After giving themselves a whopping pay raise, it turns out politicians in this province can also expect a fatter severance package when they retire.
The self-approved pay hike means the premier, if he serves his full term, will walk away with $1.1 million when he quits or loses an election.
Speaker of the House Ken Kowalski will get $1.3 million.
According to the Calgary Herald, all of this is on top of the tens of thousands of extra dollars M.L.A.'s now make every year.
Many people outside of the Tory caucus aren't happy about the severance.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation tells the Herald the size of this is absolutely outrageous, but it's the manner in which they've done this that's offensive.
Cabinet members approved the extra cash for themselves behind closed doors last week.
Laurie Blakeman, the Liberal house leader, tells 660News there needs to be a change.
Blakeman says CEO's of private companies aren't able to decide their own salaries and so M.L.A.'s shouldn't be able to either.
Opposition leader Kevin Taft also gets a bonus in all this, his severance is now sitting at 618,000.
Some PC M.L.A.'s are defending their pay raises saying in reality they should be paid a lot more.
The premier told the Herald an independent review 13 years ago suggests ministers be paid $200,000 on average, but they denied such a raise.
A copy of the report shows no such suggestion.
The M.L.A.'s severance package pays three months' salary for every year served in the legislature, with no cap on the total payout.
Most private sector jobs have a cap.
I guess the philosophy of the government is "Let them eat cake". What a bunch of corrupt crooks. Who voted for these idiots? I'm so mad.
