After giving themselves a whopping pay raise, it turns out politicians in this province can also expect a fatter severance package when they retire.

The self-approved pay hike means the premier, if he serves his full term, will walk away with $1.1 million when he quits or loses an election.

Speaker of the House Ken Kowalski will get $1.3 million.

According to the Calgary Herald, all of this is on top of the tens of thousands of extra dollars M.L.A.'s now make every year.

Many people outside of the Tory caucus aren't happy about the severance.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation tells the Herald the size of this is absolutely outrageous, but it's the manner in which they've done this that's offensive.

Cabinet members approved the extra cash for themselves behind closed doors last week.

Laurie Blakeman, the Liberal house leader, tells 660News there needs to be a change.

Blakeman says CEO's of private companies aren't able to decide their own salaries and so M.L.A.'s shouldn't be able to either.

Opposition leader Kevin Taft also gets a bonus in all this, his severance is now sitting at 618,000.

Some PC M.L.A.'s are defending their pay raises saying in reality they should be paid a lot more.

The premier told the Herald an independent review 13 years ago suggests ministers be paid $200,000 on average, but they denied such a raise.

A copy of the report shows no such suggestion.

The M.L.A.'s severance package pays three months' salary for every year served in the legislature, with no cap on the total payout.

Most private sector jobs have a cap.

I guess the philosophy of the government is "Let them eat cake". What a bunch of corrupt crooks. Who voted for these idiots? I'm so mad.

There's only one job in politics I want, and unfortunately it's unlikely to exist-

Minister of " What the F#ck is Wrong With You People?"

I am going to go waaaaay out on a limb here. I am a public servant living in Ottawa. The current government has offered us a new contract with a 1.2 % increase. Now if "we", meaning everyone in Canada is trying to jump start the economy, control inflation public servants don't mind doing their part in keeping this country going and help to improve it.
BUT - when they offer us 1.2% and then you read about provincial and federal politicans padding thier salaries and expenses accounts by more than 10% each we too get pissed off.
Yes, wouldn't we all like to get a 10% raise each year and hire each other's relatives to help pay for college or whatever. However, the reality is that it won't ever happen for us or anyone who isn't a politician.
And the conservatives wonder why there is animosity to them in the public service. We have the same trials as anyone else and are trying to send kids to college, pay bills and all that so a raise of 1.2% while they pad their own salries, pernsions and office expenses rubs the wrong way.
What is a fair raise?? Who knows. Ask 10 different people you will get 10 different answers.
