whats wrong about this auction? It seems like a good deal...gibson custom at that price....
what's wrong?
from what i see:
1) truss rod cover - not legit
2) body shape doesn't seem to be correct
3) p/up selector ring
4) spacing of volume/tone controls
maybe it's my eyes, but this thing looks like a fake.

Definitely a fake. The seller set himself up to look ignorant/innocent so he can't get called out on it. Most half-knowledgable players would know to avoid the sale but still - some poor sucker is about to pay close to a grand for a $300 guitar.
It makes me very angry

Report it to ebay. Those blurry pics are a clear attempt to deceive. Who accepts a guitar as part of selling a car?
I would contact ebay but I don't have enough knowledge to back it up. Man, I simply don't think I would buy a used Gibson anymore unless it was from a legit guitar store.

always check the serial number with Gibson prior to buying a used one. Make sure it matches the guitar you are buying.

It went for $1480 US. The real thing is not worth that.

Maybe it's just me, but if it played good I wouldn't mind paying $300 for something like that.
I know a guy that bought a counterfiet Tabaco Les Paul Supreme (on purpose) a few years back, it cost him $400.00 and plays great. I don't even think you can get an Epiphone for that price, and the little differences don't affect playability. There is definately not $4400 worth of difference.
I think it is a good thing that these are out there - maybe the big over priced companies will sit up and take notice if these things start selling like hotcakes and lower their prices to remain competitive.
Big difference if someone gets suckered into paying too much though...

Anyone else notice that the winning bidder has no feedback and just joined ebay today!
Either a shill bid gone bad (nobody topped him as planned) or someone signed up to purposefully screw up an illegitimate auction.

Cheaper instruments and cheap copies always have sold like hot cakes and always will. Look at every music store out there and you will see that stock in the cheaper sub $500 instruments out number the big items like Gibson, Fender, Martin, Taylor etc. One reason may be that its more expensive to stock the big names but if the big names sold as many units as the cheap knockoffs I don't think any music store would have a problem stocking them.
Musicians, like my self, will never settle for the knock offs. The lowest quality instrument in my house is a $1,200 solid wood Larrivee. Even though I don't play it often I don't want to own a piece of crap. So I guess there will always be a market for the big expensive guitars because there are alot of us out there that will buy them.

When you say:
"Musicians, like my self,..."
Do you mean:
musicians of the same mind set as you

Winning bidder had a score of 0. I'd lay you odds someone else noticed this was a fake, and outbid everybody else with a ridiculous price and is going to walk away from it. I've seen that before...

I hope so. I had a doctor's appointment so I didn't get to see the end. That guitar sold originally at paylessguitars.com for $250 U.S. + shipping.
For the record, I'm not against knockoffs - I own a lovely 82' Tokai and a mid-70's Yamaki (Martin copy). BUT they say "Tokai" and "Yamaki" and "Made in Japan" on them - not "Gibson" and "Made in U.S.A."
I know that most if not all of us would not be taken in by an auction like that. My concern is for the mothers and wives and grandparents who think that they are buying a loved one the guitar of their dreams.
