george carlin is one of the great comedians of the last century, and in his 70's is still one of the world's most relevant comedians.

Lenny Bruce
Bill Hicks
George Carlin

...although I don't actually find GC that funny when he's doing bits, but when he's just talking he's funny and sharp.
Bill was funny all the time.
Lenny was Lenny.

Is there anybody carrying the torch now? Who am I missing?

Jon Stewart does a good job with politcal stuff. Before him, Bill Maher's show Politically Incorrect was again timely, topical and frequently challenging.

I find when watching "Just For Laughs" or "Ha!ifax Comedy Fest" shows on CBC, the comedians that get my attention the most are either from the UK, or female. I don't go to Yuk Yuk's anymore. Most of the "acts" are middle aged men doing the same tired old dik jokes that stopped being funny when I played PeeWee baseball. (LOL, I said Pee!!!!).

See what I mean?

Mitch Hedberg coulda/shoulda been the next great stand-up, but addictions took that away.......

Here is some of Hedbergs stuff:

if you like hicks, try doug stanhope (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1t2mMMp7bjU), but be warned his material is DARK.

i'm also a huge fan of: canadians Ron James and Derek Edwards (also Brent Butt's standup is great), and worldwide i'll say Louis CK, Dave Attell, Kathleen Madigan, Lewis Black, John Pinette... off the top of my head at least.. i'm sure i'm forgetting some important ones.

I should also have mentioned Robert Newman from the Mary Whitehouse Experience -- he's sharp, funny, intelligent. Check out the History of Oil (http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-5267640865741878159&q=Robert+Newman&ei=YEJASLWSE4zkqwOb-LnlCA&hl=en)
