Hello everyone, this is my first post on GuitarsCanada.com. A few days ago I stopped by my local Goodwill to check out what they had and managed to pick up a guitar. It cost $30.00 and is in pretty rough shape but the neck is straight and it plays great. The guitar is a Hagstrom II and from what I have found online it’s from the late 60s.

This guitar has one of the fastest necks I have ever played however it has several nicks/dings and I am considering removing it and sanding/refinishing it. Can anyone give me any advice on the best ways to do this?

The body also has a small crack on it. I am thinking of stripping the sunburst finish off and getting the crack repaired then staining the body a natural wood color like the worn brown of the SG. I don’t know how I would strip this or stain it. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys!

Very good find indeed! They usually sell for around $400

Sorry, I can't help with any refinishing tips other than DON'T DO IT!

The body on these guitars were made of 4 or 5 pieces of wood glued together... The crack is most likely at one of the seams. A good repair shop could easily repair it.

Post some pictures when you have a chance!

Here's my Hagstrom III:

if you do ultimetly decide to strip the paint, pm me and I can give you some pointers.......if you peruse the threads here you will find that some guitarists buy their guitars naturally relic-ed like yours, or pay to have someone relic it for them......there is no right decision, it's your axe.....just remember "drop the "T" from paint and you get pain"
cheers
