View Full Version : Buying from US.. again
There is one thing I don't get when I buy stuff from eBay. When I ask if they ship to Canada, and if they say yes, they say you are responsible for tax and duty. Yes. On a separate occasion I had one person say no because he doesn't want to deal with taxes and duties, and that there are lots of paper work.
Last time I shipped to the US, it was like dropping off any other mail.
Do the people from US have a hard time with shipping to Canada?

:confused-smiley-010There's lots of paranoia in the US these days about 'the other' unfortunately. They're an empire in the throes of isolationism.*
That said, I've seen a bunch of complaints on TGP about problems shipping to Canada specifically where UPS has dropped gear off without collecting taxes and then hit the seller in the US up for the charges...I can't believe that's true but that's what they say.
As for shipping, who knows how many retina scans you need in the US these days to mail a parcel out of the country?
They also have a big enough pool that they don't have to deal across borders if they don't want to. I think it's harder to get paypal to back you up as a seller too if you're shipping across a border...never had any trouble myself so I wouldn't know.
*Just my $0.02 worth borne of a dislike of being treated like (a) cattle and (b) a criminal by the TSA & customs for daring to not be a US citizen last couple of times I had to travel there.

Regarding UPS. They are the only "Postal Service" that actually just leave the package outside your door, whether your home or not. I live in SURREY for godsakes! You can't do that. (Just kidding by the way about Surrey). I found $300-400 pedals or pieces of equipment just left outside my door all day. Tempting for any opportunist. Whenever someone indicates they use UPS, I usually ask for an alternative shipping method or don't buy from them.
As for the US, I've heard the same complaints from US buyers. I would imagine that they have to answer to a number of authorities because they dare send something to a non-us buyer. rectal probes and the like...

Shipping to Canada from the USA requires no more paperwork then it does for us to ship to them , just a simple description of the item and the value on the form attached to the package .
I think the problem with some there is a 4 letter word L-A-Z-Y :sport-smiley-002:

Last thing I shipped to the US was a box of 1960's to 1970's discrete IC's for use in calculators (he was a collector).
:/ I had not only to declare that what I was shipping into the US wasn't a dangerous product to be used as a means of war against them but commit myself to extradition and trial if some yokel decided otherwise  Well, at least that was the post offices explanation of the five sets of papers I had to sign >.<
That said... Canada Post managed to send my package to Nunavut instead of Minnesota :/ and then spent a month trying to mail it back to me, then another month to reimburse my postal fees.... all so I could re-send it back towards its original final destination  at which point I had almost given up!

Kinda OT, but when I was filling in (reems and reems of) paperwork to come to Canada, I had to go to the high commision in London a couple of times. It's an interesting contrast becasue it's pretty much across the street for the US embassy.
High commission: Door open, people friendly, polite.
US Embassy: Multiple layers of barricades, armed guards.
Made me think someone somewhere should take note that one of those countries was doing something right and the other wrong...

I just noticed they've landscaped the concrete barriers now...
The US is creating an "iron curtain" of defense around itself while Russia has and China is opening up to the world.
Oh... the... IRONY!
(on quiet nights, you can hear the Founding Fathers spinning in their tombs)

The extra so called paper work is just the small green form they attach to the package..that requires what is being sent and the value.
This can overwhelm the some of the US citizens, as they dont like to do anymore then they have too.
But really, if some have had problems shipping to Canada, they will never do it again.
I have had many say No to shipping to me...They say we dont ship international and i say where next door , not China.
There are many excuses..Then you get the guys that want $170.00 to ship a guitar to Canada.
I had a guitar shipped from Seattle WA to ontario for $58.00 so i know the price.
I ask to buy some computer ram one time.. It was 10.00 the guy wanted 25.00 to ship it.. I had a book ship to me from Flordia for 5.00
So dont get taken and there is not much you can do if they refuse to ship to you unless they provide free shipping to USA and you have a contact there.
I have a couple people that i could use if there is a one of a kind product that i have to have, so far that hasn't happened
All i ask for is a fair shipping price.
As far as tax and duty..and Brokers fess if you choose UPS for shipping.
I have never paid any duty, but normallly you will pay 14 % in Ontario , unless you buy something for under 30.00 then there is no tax.
People in the USA that complain about having to pay tax, or all the paper work are just making up excuses..
Its better to move on if they have that attiude i dont think i would want to buy from them.
Rick
I wouldn't accept anything shipped from the US by courier. Use USPS.
There's a tonne of threads already on this topic
Post every time I buy something from US to express mon anger!
