I delete hundreds of spam e-mails daily. Everything from designer watches, Viagra, weiner growing pills, hot women wanting to show me thier pics, foreign lotteries that I've won, scammers from Singapore/Indonesia/Nigeria who want to buy most of my stock and pay direct by credit card, people that want to split millions with just me from a foreign bank account....ect...ect. The list goes on and on.

Ain't internet life grand......

And ways they have of getting by the SPAM filters. The intentional misspelling of words - Viiagri, Penniss. My filter usually gets rid of 2/3 of the stuff. The rest is manual delete. Have you ever noticed that a number of these are set up with obsolete computers, mostly along the Chinese.Mongolia border or something. Dead batteries - the dates of the message 31/12/1999. The total assassination of the English language.

How do those creeps know when you're sitting at the dinner table with the family, just to call & interrupt an intimate setting!!! :sport-smiley-002:

The problem with spam is that they sometimes grab very important and legitimate messages.

For instance, I had a number of very important messages goto my junk file simply because the subject had the word "specialist" in it.

and within the specialist is.......

cialis.

The town of Scunthorpe in Great Britain had a similar problem. The municipal gov't set up a filter to catch the "bad words". Unfortunately in the @mail adresses ending @scunthorpe.gov.uk, there exists a character string that triggered the filter. Nobody who worked for the municipal gov't got an email for a few days until the flaw was noticed.

With telemarketers, it is the windows and doors guys that account for 2/3 of the calls - how the hell do they know I live in house over 50 years old?!? Bastards!

Ah yes, and then there's the sad case of Peniston, Alberta.

Tragic really.

I don't get hardly any SPAM at all - I have my mail server drop connections from the asian pacific region (APNIC) and a few other Geographical Areas and I got my incomming SPAM down to about 5% of what it was before I blocked them. Spam Assassin is configured to take care of what's left so when it is passed off to my Exchange server I might get a filtered message or two a day.

The odd time I will get SPAM from someone I know, because they are having a problem with their mail server or they've picked up a bug on a PC. Rarely, I will get a call from someone regarding a message that they sent me that I didn't recieve, but they almost allways turn out to be sent from improperly configured mail servers that are either blacklisted or at least should be - which is usually why they are trying to contact me in the first place.

I have over 100 e-mail addresses (some are Exchange Public folders), for more than a dozen domain names in my three companies.

I used to run all sorts of junk to filter spam with spam assassin and all manner of complicated malarkey...now though I thunderbird's spam filters to be pretty good.

As far as telemarketers...who I hate with a passion...I've found that unplugging the phone works great. It's a pain sure, but not as much as having those cock-a-roaches calling ans disturbing me. Leave the answering machine on and turn the ringer off...

I get minimal spam fortunately.

As far as calls I have two approaches. First there is a national no call list.
http://www.the-cma.org/ let them know that you are on the list.

If I am feeling in a jovial mood I tell them that I have a new policy and that they have to spend a $3000 dollars with my company first and where do they want the cabinets sent. That usually leaves them dumbfounded.

Capitol One has stopped calling after the I signed upon the no call list.

I had a call one day from a company offering a monthly fee service that covered your furnace if it needed repairs . I have a semi efficient furnace which is pretty straight forward in terms of maintanance plus I have a friend and a local heating guy that is good at helping me out if I do have a problem that I can't fix myself .
When I told this guy I was not interested he proceeded to start ridiculing me as if I was an idiot for not wanting their service . I told him what I thought of his remarks and politely told him to F%%k off and slammed down the phone . I have little patience for telemerketers but even less for ones like that .

If you ar using Outlook you can block mail in languages or character setsother than the ones you can read. It can also be done at the server level.

As for the do not (hesitate to) call list, does it actually work? From what I read, the marketing lobbies gutted that bill quite thoroughly. I did sign up on Michael Geist's iOptOut (http://ioptout.ca/) to see if that helps any...

That's great the way that guy strung the telemarketer along , I'll bet he quit his job after that .

Speaking of telemarketers I had one call me today about something to do with natural gas.....his accent was so heavy I could only understand a few words he said . He got the "I'm not interested " treatment followed by me hanging up

I'm willing to bet that for those few days things ran better than ever in the municipality of Scunthorpe.

I don't agree with treating people who are just doing their jobs. Telemarketers aren't the company, they are people like you and me who work FOR the company.

You can always request to be removed from call lists.
