I have a Traynor YGM-4 I bought from my brother-in-law in around '78. He had made some changes including bumping the tubes up to the 6L6's. So now it has crapped out and one of the tabs has broken out the socket.
My question is this: Do I return it to original ? or use what I have now, suck it up and replace the socket?

I would return it to stock, Steve. El84's need much less drive than 6L6's. That's why they sound more Marshall than Fender.

If the amp is stock it will have the stock sound. That's what sells these amps. A YGM-4 with 6L6's will have a unique sound. Someone would have to hear it for themselves before they could decide if they wanted it. Also, the output transformer would not be quite the right load for 6l6's, further driving the sound into unknown territory.

If you don't care about resale value and you don't have to pay for tech work then what the heck - hack it all you want! It seems kinda a shame, though.
