A buddy of mine has come into possesion of a mid 60's Gibson GA-20 RVT Minuteman amp.

What can you tell me about the possibilities? The cleans are OK, but cranked it's a bit poo-ey sounding. It's either make it a great amp, or sell it quick.

Great amp, Paul! I've worked on a number of them.

First off, it was designed to be clean. If that's not what you want there's not a lot you can do. My suggestion is DO NOT HACK THIS AMP!

There are lots of blues and country players that would give their left testicle and a sack of diamonds for one of these old Gibson amps. Hacking would only destroy the resale value.

So you can probably flip it for a good buck. Check out Ebay for pricing history.

I'd be tempted to keep it! For what it does, it does it well. One thing you CAN do is change the speaker for an Eminence Rajun Cajun! Save the old speaker 'cuz when you sell it some buyers are really anal about having the original speaker. The Eminence is a lot more efficient which means the amp will sound noticeably louder, with a more "in-your-face" tone.

It will still be very much a bluesy amp but it will be a lot less Delta and a LOT more Chicago, if you know what I mean! I must have done this for at least half a dozen players with these little Gibsons and not one has regretted going to the Eminence.
