I’m looking for input on a shredder for my son. He is young and is playing an inexpensive Ibanez GAX60 now after moving up from a ¾ size jay turser LP copy.

We (me paying him demanding) are looking for a double humbucker with no Floyd rose (easier to keep in tune) guitar with a hard and fast neck like a Jackson, Ibanez or Yamaha maybe…

We are also looking for something a cut above the usual crap but not the full on USA customs.

Budget would be 800ish bucks new or used.

Please shed any insight into these shredders. I’m an old fart used to an acoustic and familiar with more traditional Strats and LP’s.

An Ibanez? If he wants to do dives, it's going to be alot harder with a vintage style trem. A floyd rose is not harder to tune, it's tuning is MORE stable if you don't do 100 bombs in 5 minutes. Ibanez has more stable trems anyway like the edge pro's.

Well with a Floyd Rose system, it's actually easier to KEEP in tune. You have fine tuners on the bottom of the bridge as well.
The only hard thing is to change the strings.

Anyways, if you could manage buying a guitar witha floyd rose, then go for an Ibanez RG320 if you dont wanna spend too much money.
Or go for the Ibanez RG550 which is a bit more expenive.
Both guitars have amazing thin necks for easy playing

Yup, if he likes Ibanez stick with that brand. Jacksons are nice too and good value for the money. A good Floyd is a breeze to keep in tune.

ESP's LTD line are excellent, with a nice selection of hardtail models. they have excellent fretwork and fast necks. they're carried by steve's music (isn't there one in ottawa? i forget).... their sister company is schecter, also excellent guitars, but the necks tend to be a bit meatier. some of the higher end BC Rich guitars are nice... Jacksons are also very nice, but generally they also have floyd roses... (unlike the rest, i'm gonna say if the lad wants a hard tail, then by all means get one... real floyds are great, the licensed copies vary wildly in quality)

edit* also you might look for an older kramer? another great choice would be a peavey wolfgang, they're out there in hardtail versions, and are an EXTREMELY fast neck, and you can get an american made special hardtail for about $700 in good shape.

Yeah, pretty much everyone suttree just mentioned makes hardtails, some of them very nice.

A friend of mine just recently bought an Ibanez hardtail to go with his regular Floyd version. He uses the new one for switching between alternate tunings, which is a pain on the Floyd guitar. It's a nice axe and right around $800. I can get details if you want them. Or just look at the selection on any major guitar store online.

+1 on the Jackson, they are really good shredder. And the pick up are really metalish!
The Ibanez are really great too, ask him to try them both!

The Floyd rose is stable if you don't play with it and you get them really well seted up! That depends with what you do with it! ;) If Van Halen or Steve Vay can do it why not your son too? :P

Good recommendations here.

I'd recommend a Jackson Christian Olde Wolbers model, can be found for about $500 used, nice slick neck, hardtail as you requested, some have a camo paintjob that I'm sure kids like, others are black....take the remaining $300 from your budget and buy some pedals/lessons.

I like Floyds as well, but citing Vai or EVH as a reference is moot, since those guys have dedicated techs working for them full time getting paid $50-60k to make damn sure their guitars stay in tune. :food-smiley-004:
