Late night eBay browsing and I came across this:
50000-SONGS-Ultimate-Guitar-Tablature-Tabs-Archive-HOT (http://cgi.ebay.ca/50000-SONGS-Ultimate-Guitar-Tablature-Tabs-Archive-HOT_W0QQitemZ320247928570QQihZ011QQcategoryZ2384QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

I highly doubt he made all of these tabs. I can guess most if not all came from MSB. I remember when MSB used to be a site where people shared each's work and people recognized the time and effort put into making tabs. This person is making money off of someone elses' work.

"Guitar Pro is a software meant to help musicians and aspiring musicians to compose, transcribe, edit and study music. It also helps the sharing of compositions among groups of people and other musicians." -> and the person believes he/she is doing his/her own work with sharing? Makes me .

I also think this is illegal; if MSB shut down due to issues with copyright laws, this is even worse.

Illegal stuff has been out of control on eBay for years.

Man, I remember when OLGA didn't even have a web page. You emailed the OLGA server and it would send back listings for what it had via email for a particular letter. And then you emailed it back with a list of the transcriptions you wanted.

All that over a 2400 bps modem on a TTY terminal kids. High technology.

And now it's gone. Buried by greed and lawyers. So sad.

Guitar pro is good.
Tabs aren't for reasons that are still unclear to me

You can get that for free - legally I think - off the Internet.
GP is OK for getting a rough idea and kickstarting learning a song IMO.

yes. They're like little midifiles you can play on your PC with the gp software (or there are a few OSS alternatives). They sound horrible -- I guess if you have proper midi setup they might not sound as horrible--but they have playalong tabs and it's often good enough to get you started.
Lots of people contribute tabs, so the quality varies greatly. I think whoever's responsible for GP sponsors or otherwise encourages some pretty accurate versions, so I'm not sure what kind of licence they have, but much of what's available is community contributed.
I think it's riiculous that lawyers killed OLGA. Can you imagine Led Zeppeling starting up now, the lawsuits that would fly with all their Willie Dixon ripoffs? They'd never get a chance to take off like a lead baloon...a lot of albums when I was a kid had a sticker on them reading 'Home taping is killing music' I think it should be replaced now with 'Corporate greed and the music industry is killing music'
How long before they start suing people for playing a song round a campfire as a public performance? They already did it to taxi drivers in the UK playing the radio...

Agreed though, the guy selling these online is a maggot.
