I've been intrigued with a jazz funk band called the New Mastersounds from Leeds, Eng. So I changed the strings on my MIJ Epi Riviera to Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Swing strings, 11s, flatwound, wound G.

Man, what a difference. With little adjustment, I got it sounding like a dirty jazz box. The Duncan Jazz III picks also helped (yes there is a sonic difference here). I did have to adjust the pole pieces - lowered the high E and B strings, raised the poles on the rest, sort of like a strat staggered pole pup. I also like the way it sounds with a compressor pedal.

I have no idea how to play jazz, but funk, I have experience with.

I have been curious about those strings. I like how flatwounds feel but the "regular" sets are kind of dull sounding. Now the Thomastik-Infeld sets start like regular 11 sets but end like regular 9 or 10 sets. Maybe the smaller bass strings provide better balance for flatwounds.
