Take a piece of cardboard and cut out a les paul shape,as close to size as you can.Tke the piece and lay it on the wood and try the wood in both bookmatches. It gives you a much better idea of how it will look on a guitar:smile:

thats what i will do, i wanted to do a les paul style but i guess a 5/16 top is not thick enough to make a carve top

Unless you only carve it 5/16" but I would thought you would need more.
Not that I have carved a guitar top ... that's next the next one

I usually use 1/2 -5/8 for a carve top however, most places sell 1/4 maple caps so you can still carve it not just quite as much. I would think that it would be fine for a LP top. Here is a tip. Once you have the top glued in place, take a pass around the outer edge with a 1/2 inch rabbit bit to the depth that you want left for the edge of the cap. Then you can carve almost the full depth of the wood just inside of the outer edge and leave the outer edge the thickness that you want. This will give the illusion of a very deep carve because it will show the actual carve and the thickness of the edge. To the eye it will look like the combination of the two.
