I will be in the market for a guitar next month and would like to know what other brands/models compare to the Gibson ES335 in terms of that signature open, woody tone? Thanks!

I just tried the Ibanez Scofield model (MIJ) and was VERY impressed.
You might also consider looking around for an old MIJ lawsuit 335 . The MIJ Tokai and Yamaha 335 style guitars would also be good to look at.
Good luck with your search and keep us posted.

Heritage H535 or the Ibanez Artstar/Scofield as noted above.
I almost bought a Heritage before I found the ES-335.

The Edwards one looks so nice! I drroling one one, but I hate to deal with the international shipping! I never know how EMS works...
But I put my vote that one either!

I'd get an Artcore. They're awesome!

Don't laugh, but I have an Agile 335 clone and it smokes! I replaced all the electronics with and RS GuitarsWorks kit and swapped out the pickups for SD 59s! It sounds and plays amazing (and I own "pro" guitars).

Thanks for all the tips :-) I will certainly buy something locally, not online. Will also have the Eastwood Savannah on my to-try list. Fun!

I just noticed this on the 12th fret website. A 1980 ArtistAS200 going for $1150.
You could do a lot worse than this.

I just picked up a 335 Fade recently, after an exhaustive seach for this style of guitar. I played tons of them, and this fade ran away with my $$$. I played custom shops, historics, and Tokais(very good guitars!!) and this one had that "mojo" thang goin' on. Litle polish, and some 500 k pots and this thing is a keeper!

I love my Yamaha SA500 (the one on the left LOL!). Under 500 bucks brand new with case at L&M, and it sounds great for all the styles of music I like to play, WITHOUT pickup of electronics changes. It has become my go-to guitar over and above my LP and my G&L Legacy. http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/295/newandoldnh8.jpg
