I've got a line on a Fender Twin Reverb that has been gathering dust for the past 3 years.

It's beat up pretty good and I'm unsure as to the originality of the components or the reliability of the amp.

the price I've negotiated is $600.

Should I avoid this amp or jump on it at that price? I don't mind investing\upgrading. I don't really care if this baby is all original or not. I'm just wondering if the price is fair for a beat up Twin Reverb (late 60's-mid 70's is our best guess for age).

Or is this something I should probably avoid?

Assuming that its working, I'd say thats a good deal. There are a few used Twin Reverbs on this site, which is a used store within driving distance of Ottawa:

However, make sure you also budget for a roadie if you're going to be gigging it! Those things are stupid heavy. The other guitarist in a previous band had one, and it was always a pain in the ass to lug it up and down stairs (and it seemed to be even heavier AFTER a gig).

On the plus side, he always got great tone from it. Assuming that you dont mind getting your dirt from a pedal.

Depends skydigger...the earlier the better. If it's got no master volume, it's '72 or before. Of the Silverface series, they're the most desirable and IMO the best sounding. If it's after around '76 it's not nearly as desirable as it's the dreaded ultralinear output transformer type @ 135 watts. These ones don't sound as good as the older ones and $600 would be around the going rate for one in decent condition.

As much as I have to respect a guy with 4 B3's......and not withstanding that this a a guitar site.......The 135 Watt Ultra Linear Twin Reverb amps are among the best clean amps out there. You will never get it to sound like a cranked tweed deluxe, or even a cranked Blackface Twin Reverb. The 135 Watters have a valuable place. Mine sees it's service as the amp for a Stage 73 Rhodes Electric Piano. IMHO, there ain't a better amp for that purpose.

YMMV
