this may not surprise long time flatpickers but for a starter it may help getting the sound yer after.I find a thin strong pic gives me lots of attack and tone, thicker softer pics to me lose some defintion. If your starting to pic DONT assume they are all the same, try many, then more untill you like the sound.Of course different pics for different uses is another thing,A big thin can get you some cool rythme going. Hope this wasnt a DUH!! thread
^^^^^^stay tuned ^^^^^JIM

On my 12 string I like Teckpicks--yes, metal picks are said to kill your strings sooner--but they sound great on my 12 string--otherwise I use Tortex 1.14mm, or something similar.

I agree that different picks affect the sound--and it's good to experiment.
I know people who think I'm crazy for using a thick pick on an acoustic--but I find I actually pick more softly, and get a wider range of dynamics with a thick pick. In fact switching to thick picks many. many years ago was an important step in developing my picking technique--it improved drastically in a short time.

Of course your experience may vary.

My other acoustic is a classical--so I normally use my fingers on that one.

I use the tortex pics. I use .88 (the green one) if I'm playing lead and I use .73 (the yellow one) if I'm playing rythem. If I play rythem with a pick that is .88 thick, the pick falls out of my grip more.
