My son just recently bought a 6505 plus head with a marshall 1960A cab instead of the standard peavey speakers. Anyway all he plays is metal and some of his favourite bands use this head so he went for it. The amp is definately a monster as far as gain and sheer volume.

I play as well and in my opinon the thing really lacks bottom end. With all the mids dialed out and bass full, it just seems to need more. I noticed the frequency range on the head starts at 50k, well what I'm wondering is if an EQ pedal would help boost the low end without any mud. I should add we have a Jackson and strat both with seymor duncans in them so I dont think its the pick ups.
A previous Marshall rental we had, really had what I felt was good bottom end
but my kid didnt want it. (DSL 100watter with 1960A vintage speakers)

The 2 pedals were looking at are boss ge 7 and the mxr 10 band, if we take the eq and just boost the 50k slider will this give us a noticable increase in bottom?
I have never used a EQ pedal before so I dont what to expect.

Any response greatly appreciated.

Did you try turning up the Resonance nob? That usually does it.

Very strange.

Was the cab you bought for it new? The 6505 should not be lacking in low end. Was the head new? Maybe you happened to get faulty Power tubes from the factory.

On the note of an EQ pedal, sticking one of those in the loop will add more low end without mud as long as you don't peak the Bass Frequencies. My only concern would be having the low on the amp cranked to full and having the Eq bass frequencies on full would be pure mud.

I agree with SinCron, play around with the Resonance and make sure you're using the resonance for that channel. Dumb mistake ya but it could be done.

Could you post what his settings on the amp are?

My kids adjust the resonance knob but I will play around with it

The Head and cab were brand spanking new

He's out at rehersal now so I will try and post his settings later

Thanks for the responses guys

Here are the current settings on the 6505+

Rythym channel

Pre Low Mid High Post Res Pres Crunch & bright on
2 10 0 4 1 5 3
This channel is run somewhat clean as it is front ended with a Boss multy - effects pedal with a few distortion settings

Lead channel
Pre Low Mid high Post Res Pres
8 10 3 5 1 10 8

These are bedroom volumes nothing to loud

If those are bedroom levels, does he just turn up the post level for jamming? Most of a tube amps girth and body comes from the power section, so the post gain needs to be pushed for that to happen.

Well, if I scoop the mids on my Ampegs, it will rob some of the low end, just a thought.

WOW holy gain!

But what JSX/6505 said if he's playing the amp at a post of 1 there isn't going to be that in your face low end thump, yet with RES set to 10 you should be hearing some low end wanting to push through. If not I'd suggest checking out those power tubes.

Just to make sure doesn't the RES and Pres only effect the power amp section while the rest of the EQ deals with the pre amp?

The 1960A Marshall cab is loaded with G12T-75's right? There should be plenty of bass with those settings and those speakers.

Just try turing up the volume

Oh is he using any of those distortions from the Boss Unit with the lead channel of the 6505? Cause that probably would thin out the sound.

But if you are considering my suggestion to swap out the power tubes, go with TAD 6L6GC -STR probably the best ones for the 5150/6505.... Others will say JJ but thats their opinion and this is mine.

Remove the FX unit, and try guitar -> amp. It should have PLENTY of bottom end.

put all the EQ to 5 and adjust from there. those settings look scary.
