I sold a guitar a few years ago and I kinda wish I didn't! I'd love to find it again. Here's a description...
Epiphone Firebird prototype, circa...late 80's? Set neck, ebony fretboard, dot inlays, EMG Select pickups, Steinberger tremolo bridge with floating saddles and a lock so it can convert to hardtail, tobacco brown colour.
The story I got from the guy I bought it from was only a couple came to Canada and were sent to dealers to get their opinions. The dealers said no one would buy it since it had all these high end features but it was only an Epiphone, so it never went into production. I sold it to Long & McQuade Scarborough around 2000 so I could buy an Epi Les Paul.
Anyone seen it??

Haha. I'm sure now that I've said how rare it is no one will ever tell me if they have it!

Hey shoretyus how's Coe Hill?? Various family members have had cottages on Wollaston Lake since the 50's.

That sounds like an Epiphone Firebird 300 or 500 (circa 86-88), depending on the pickups you had (one single coil, one hum for 300; 2 hums for the 500). They were made in Korea, and had a neck-through design (just like an old Firebird), and an ebanol fretboard (fake ebony). Your's was likely not a prototype...
They had that God-aweful Steinberger trem locking thing that never seemed to work on the one I had. It would always slip. It was a POS.
The guitar was only OK. It had a gummy feel to it, and it never stayed in tune. It was nothing like a real Firebird.
Go for a bicentennial model, or a newish one, instead.

Interesting, I'll have to research that model and see if that's what I had. You're right about the bridge, that's pretty much the reason I sold it!

I actually found this thread while trying to figure out what I had sitting here. I bought mine from a pawn shop near Washington DC in the early 90's. If what is posted here is accurate, it would be a Firebird 300...black, Steinberger trem, ebony-like fretboard, EMG Select hummer in the bridge, single in the neck. Were you ever able to find anymore info on this model?
