I have a Japanese Tele strung in 10 to 52. Because I play less frequently
I'm considering going to 9 -46. My concern is that the intonation on the three saddle bridges is just about perfect on the stock configuration and going to 9's will make it play out of tune when intonated as best as possible. What I'm trying to say is that I've never had perfect intonation before on a stock 3 saddle bridge and I attribute this fact to the 10 gauge strings installed.

ya ive found larger strings easier to intonate- however ill bet you can get the 9's close enough. you may have to compromise a bit, but thats ok- unless you play with a really light touch, the importance of bang on perfect intonation is overrated in my opinion. i find with light strings, even if the guitar is perfectly intonated, it wont sound like it when i play it-

...i am also considering going down in gauge, from 10s to 9s.

i haven't decided yet which guitar is going to be the designated lab rat, but i'm thinking the eastwood sg copy.

You might want to drop by the music store and try out a guitar with 9s on it first. I restrung my Strat with 9s and hated it. Way to slinky for my clumsy fingers and the tone sounded a bit thin to my ears, really lacked the depth of larger strings.

I like 10's and have come down from 12s...11's.

just fyi, I think ernie ball or diadarrio make a 9.5 set, that might solve all your issues, a friend of mine out in maryland told me about these, he loves them.
